Default White Salmon ??

Hi,

I'm interested in quality-of-life info for the White Salmon area. How's the air? The drinking water? The schools? The library? High-speed internet? (Sorry, I hope I don't offend anyone with these questions.)

Doesn't seem like there's a lot of real estate available. What gives?

Thanks to anyone who knows the area & can respond.

Default White Salmon

White Salmon is nice but small pop. is a little over 2200. Real estate is hard to find here. Everything is very expensive and because the town is so small less expensive house get bought up quickly. The views here are beautiful and if you enjou the out doors then White Salmon is gret.

It's nice, but all the attention gets lavished onto Hood River (just across the river). The do some of the X-Games there. HR is probably the coolest out of the way town to live in if you're under 40. White Salmon is quieter and smaller, but nice also; more country-ish. Pretty good commute to Vancouver/Portland for work. It also gets very windy in the area.

Smile Hood River/White Salmon

We, too, are looking at this area, as well as Stevenson. One idea was to live in White Salmon and drive to Hood River for activities. Questions: How bad is the wind? Does it make you crazy miserable? Is it bad enough that you can't stand up straight on the street? Also, it seemed as though there was a lot of stuff in H.R. and The Dalles nearby. Are there libraries, bookstores, museums, movie theaters, restaurants, grocery stores, gyms? In other words, would you have to drive to Portland everyday? We'll be retired - in our mid-fifties - and will want to be active. We love the beauty of the gorge. Thanks for any feedback you can offer!

Yes, at times the strength of the wind can be surprising if you're not ready for it. No, you don't have to drive to Portland everyday. (Even if you had to, I-84 makes it a straight shot.) The only issue I ever had with the winds were an occasional case of sinusitis.

The gorge winds typically drop off very quickly as you go even a short distance up out of the gorge itself into either the Hood River or White Salmon valleys.
