I'd be in Japan in a heart beat! Getting stationed overseas will have challenges, and it WON'T be like home, but that's the point. Get out and explore, experience a different culture, once in a lifetime experience. Just be forewarned, don't ride the subway, Japanese men are known for being grabbers on the tightknit subway.....anyway I'd go there.

Good luck either way.

Hubbie said it was years ago, and all he could advise you about were the bars...typical young Navy man then, I guess. :-)

Good luck, honey...

Compared to the Seattle side, you're right; however, if you're coming from my area in Seabeck, there is definitely more traffic, usually in the evenings when the shipyard folk get off, etc.

Wink Ref: Brightcopperkettles on Bremerton

Hi. I have just recently returned home (to the Ozarks) from a visit with family in Bremerton. There are several issues and concersns with the safety of young children in the home there. I have been doing a little research for registered sex offenders in their area, by the zip code, when I ran across this forum. I was interested in one of your posts to "Navy Wife" as you suggested she be cautious of two zip codes when looking for a place to live in Bremerton. After my research, I have to say you passed on some good advice, especially to families with children. Those zip codes came up quite often and in addition I found 14 offenders under the zip I was looking for....and half of those are probably within a mile or two of my family's house! (not so good in my opinion) Another thing I was interested in was when you mentioned the Harrison Hospital. (Small world?) I will be trying to contact the Occupational Therapy Dept. there tomorrow to see if I can locate a very nice therapist that I met when she came to the family home. I just have a first name and it sounds like the hospital is quite large. Wish me luck. By the way, about four months ago, I was trying to find a good school for the children. I checked Great Schools.com for a starting point and decided on Jackson Park Elementery. It's not easy trying to choose a school when a person has no idea about the area. I talked to anyone that would listen to me, including the principal and appreciated her help, but in the end, the children were not able to get in at that time. Does anyone have an opinion about the school or other suggestions? Otherwise, I'll try to put them on the waiting list for next year since they thought some of the kids and the staff they saw were very happy and friendly to each other. Something that is grossly missing at the school where they are now. I visited the school several times during my visit and especially did not like the 4th grade teacher. Very harsh and crude acting. Soooo.. they don't like the school and don't want to go back again next year. It wasn't on my list to begin with but ya take your chances. Well, there's plenty of information on this forum so I'll keep reading the posts. It's refreshing to see honest, informative comments to "get a feel" for Bremerton and the surrounding area.

i am a navy wife living in virginia as we speak. ready to move though. traffic is awful. schools in norfolk are awful unless you have enough to send your kid(s) to a private school. my thing is if you decide to come to va., would be stay far out. chesepeake, suffolk, ect. definately not norfolk, portsmouth, newport news. va beach is good depending where you go. the schools are better than norfolk. as for too much navy. i love navy life except deployments and underways. and it is military based. so they love us here for the most part. just my opinion.

Default the job and school part

I dont know if moving to this area is still one of your options, but if so, I know the NEX on bremerton base is hiring. also, if you are considering housing, bangor base housing has been mostly rebuilt in the past couple years, the homes there look very nice. Jackson Park housing has some newer homes, and some that are still very old. as far as school systems: Jackson Park Elementary School is mostly military kids, they are used to new students from all over. and we have not had any problems with the teachers at all. I have heard good things about ridgetop elementary as well.

hope this helps

Active Navy myself and just PCS'd from Everett, Wa to San Diego. Bremerton is a very small run down town in my eyes. Bremerton base lacks everything a military member needs plus rain about 300 out of 365 a year. The Sound make traveling around or over difficult of lengthy with ferries.

San Diego... It's SO CAL! Barely rains and doesn't get really hot year around. Schools are better and there is so much more to do with greater variety.

I heard nothing but great things about Japan duty!

Good luck! Mojo
