Navywife, When are you moving to Yokosuka Japan? I am currently living there, but leaving in Aug! I love it here.Don't worry too much about the subways, people are pretty well manored,I take the trains and subways all the time with my children! I do have a house in the East Bremerton area, but am going to sell in Aug. I really loved the area, and the convenience of living near the Naval hospital, comissaries and Exchanges on both the sub base and Brem base .We have decided to move to Texas for retirement out of the Navy. Texas jsut seems like a better choice of lifesytyle for us. We like to be outside, poolside and BBQ. If you are interested in a great supportive website for new families moving to Yokosuka just let me know! GO for it, and live a different culture, you wont be sorry!

Hi!
Maybe you can help me out. We are also a military family moving to the Bermerton Navy base. I found a job downtown. My husband will be at the base and we have a 3 year old. Can you please help me out with advice on places to live, daycares, where not to live, price ranges of places. Any advice I would really appreciate.
~Thank you

I live in Seabeck, which is about 20 minutes to downtown Bremerton. There are houses in the Seabeck area that are for rent or for sale. Seabeck is where a lot of the doctors live, but there are affordable places, and it is quiet and beautiful. Good place to raise children.

My neighbor is getting ready to take off for Mexico for the winter, and he and his wife are going to rent their house out for about $1000 a month; it is on 4 acres and has a pond. They only live up here in the summertime, and when they summer up here, they just live in their motorhome. They also have a plum tree and two apple trees on their property. They also have a separate garage. Let me know right away if you're interested, and I will put you in touch with them.

What kind of place are you looking for?

I'm from Hawaii and visited the Bremerton area this past Christmas. Port Orchard is a nice, cute town, but it's chalked full of old people, so might not be too fun for kids having their friends potentially too far away to play with them after school and stuff.

Silverdale is also a nice town with more of a modern corporate feel (Home Depot, Best Buy, Etc.). Probably better for younger people than Bremerton, which is your classic run down old town. Low property values attract low-lifes --> hence the problems with Bremerton.

Hi there (this is going to be long)

I lived in Yokosuka from 2003 to 2006. I absolutely loved it and had a great time. Japan itself has a lot of beautiful places to visit and MWR does a great job of offering a variety of events and trips that are more budget friendly than doing it yourself. If you are more of an adventurer, the train systems are quite easy to navigate once you get used to it.

Traffic in Yokosuka and between other cities (ie Tokyo, Yokohama) can be a little trying. I lived about 6 miles off base and the commute was anywhere from 40-60 mins in the morning (yes, I'm serious). Just a lot of people going in the same direction The housing office will help you in finding a place to rent out in town because the housing waitlist tends to be quite long. We lived out in town for about a year and a half but the washing machine that the base loans out was just too small for my husband's clothes (sounds crazy but it drove me nuts). Forget about using the dryer, you have to hang your clothes and in the winter, your house can look like a laundromat. I would advise getting on the base list as soon as you get there but enjoy your experience living out in town while you can.

The Yokosuka area was VERY safe when we were there, unfortunately at the very end of our tour, there was a rash of crime but it was mainly the sailors from the ships. The base CO instituted a curfew and cracked down, I think it got better, I never heard anything further about it from my friends that were still there.

Shopping out in town can be very expensive, I basically shopped at the exchange or online for clothes and Christmas presents. Also, there are some great little food markets but for your day to day groceries, go to the commissary.

All in all, I loved Japan and if my husband wasn't retiring I would take another tour there. Make sure you ask for directions to the "D2". Its a store similar to Wal-Mart and has lots of stuff for great prices.
