Shelley,
Our weather should be gorgeous when you get here, but a rain ponch would be a good investment.

Again, you would have to drive a small piece of hwy to get there, but if you live in Lacey, there are small town homes that you can rent and they do take animals (we had two rotties, and two cats).
Not sure about he rain coats or the boots....lol ...I just deal with it.....lol

I found this thread while searching for places to live near Ft Lewis. Shelley, I, too, am in San Antonio right now and we are PCSing in June to Lewis. I completely understand your anxiety on I35, 1604, 410 and 10! This place is nutz! Don't get me started on frontage roads....DANGEROUS! Thank you for asking this question because its exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for all that responded. It helps a lot!
To the poster that asked if Shelley had enjoyed Texas' beauty. I have. It is beautiful and I'm glad I spent 15 months here. However, I'm done. I can't wait for WA.

I just met another person from San Antonio who lamented about the traffic and poor driving. I realize from his story that this is a legitimate problem down there. I can assure you our driving conditions around Ft. Lewis are not that bad. If Steilacoom and Dupont won't work for you, I'd recommend finding a home in Lacey. It's less than 10 miles to post, affordable, and has all the amenities.

I simply don't like it here and shame on you for trying to tell me what I should and should not like. I doubt I would like living an any dry desert-type climate, or in any city that is predominantly governed by the Church of Christ.

Both of those places are nice, but we also really like some of the homes in Roy and some in Yelm. We had been living on an acre of land out in the country, but it was really difficult here. Running the AC in our 2005-built home cost us around $300/month in the summer, and then trying to water the front yard and a small portion of the back yard cost us another $300/month. We thought we just wouldn't water, but the stickers that grew in place of the grass were horrendous (we called them sand burs in Florida). Anyway, we would really like to have a little land, at the least .25 acre, so Roy and Yelm seemed more of what we were looking for.
As for now, our orders have been revoked. There is a shortage of people that do my husbands job at our current base, but we will be having another assignment drop in May and we're hoping to try again.
Until then, I'll keep dreaming of Washington! Thanks everyone for your replies and help!
