My friend basically owns an island in Mt. Vernon (one of their lakes). I'm very partial to doing outdoorsy activities there, there's so much to offer. People are nice and helpful. Very removed, yet still close enough to enjoy civilization.
Liberals in Western WA/OR tend to be the kind that (would want to) ban plastic grocery bags (WA hasn't done it just yet, but IDK about OR), are extremely green, high taxes on a lot of things for social programs... we even have a sin tax on candies, bottled water, usage of brown bags/grocery bags among others. Those sort of things are generally not what a Conservative would go for.
Unfortunately, it's Western WA/OR that gets to decide policies for the entire state since its extremely populous in comparison to their counter parts. So there's a political divide within both states. Basically you'll oftentimes hear people referring to WA and OR as being "Cali-light".
That can only mean one thing Democrats & liberals, Recycle & ban plastic bags and raise prices and taxes on everything.
Washington & Oregon are both becoming like the Republik of Kalifornia?
I know t here was a big migration of Californians in 1991 to both Washington and Oregon. Don't tell me they took their stupid laws with them
Yes. I Agree. I grew up near Portland and my Family is very Conservative. We love guns and go hunting. We grew our own food, Raised our own cows & Pigs for meat. My Dad milked the cows, We had chickens for eggs, (Our meals were usually entirely Home-grown) My mom washed and reused plastic bags and we recycled the few cans we accumulated. We never dressed in impressive clothing. My Childhood was super-fun! My Parents grew up during the Great Depression and World War 2. My Family is more likely to Vote Republican. I Do think Conservatives like to recycle, and we LOVE the Outdoors and Nature! Most prefer a more simple life.
I Agree that in Western Washington and Oregon People don't really care what you are. People there let you be. But they do not Smile & talk to strangers or hold the door open for you like they do in some other parts of the country. People there tend to live their own lives and that is fine.

Sounds like SF and everybody keeps their doors and windows locked

OR and WA have very wimpy Governors who prop each other up in becoming 'Just-like-CA', (They are 'Wanna-bee's )
Very sad, they don't represent the people, they are pumping their image to garner votes, and destroying the economic bases of their respective states in the process. Remember that 3 counties run the entire state in each OR and WA. AND those counties DON'T create the most jobs, commerce, or revenue FOR the state. Those counties drink revenues FROM the state like the addict leaches that they are (bloated bureaucracy).

Kinda self propagating
AK is the only 'Free' state on west coast.
Two more wanna bee Californias...Maybe Idaho would be a better choice after all.
While I don't actually consider our conservatives conservative or our liberals liberal, skin is right as usual with respect to the generally accepted use of the terms. People vote for the Repugnicans over here, and for the Democrappy party over on the west side. In fact, I just pitched my primary ballot, because most of the locals were running unopposed, and for most offices no one but Repugnicans (and absolutely no third parties) even bothered to enter the races.
However, one fairly nice thing about Washington is that people aren't too personally oppressive with their politics, whatever they be. As I think skin would likely confirm, the general motto in this state is that if someone isn't washing your fact in his or her difference, he or she lives his or her life, you live yours.
Well put, as usual. While there is the ever-present east-west divide in WA, it is perhaps the most "live and let live" places I've lived--unless you're talking dams and salmon!

Washington and Oregon becoming like California has been a decades-old refrain.
The migration out of California has been taking place for decades as well and has given many Washingtonians a whipping boy for their ills...some founded, some maybe not so much.

Idaho is nice!
They get quite a bit of snow, but it's better than the constant rain. Spokane Washington and Boise Idaho are listed in the top 5 for safest cities. (Spokane is very near Idaho.) I Have lived in Washington near Portland and also near Spokane, 3 miles from the Idaho Border. We always referred to Western Washington as "The Other Washington" HAHA! I've heard other people doing that too! The East and West are SOOOOOO Completely Different in every way.

I will take rain over snow anyday because at least in the rain you won't be snowed in at home or have to shovel snow. You can still drive in the rain. I had a friend in Idaho and he said it was very cold there and the snow kept them home and of course was dangerous driving on those icy roads.
What's are the differences between East and West Washington?
Western WA: Liberal; rainy 9 months. Very Populous around the Puget Sound. Bad traffic (the i5 corridor which starts roughly around Marysville/Everett and goes towards Lacey; 405 and i167 not any better). No guarantee of snow every year, but when you do have snow, ICY road conditions.
Eastern WA: Conservative, 4 seasons. Underrated. I think they actually handle snow much better than Western WA.
A couple years ago W.WA had some serious fluke snow (my area received like 17") and totally shut down the town, almost literally everyone complained about it... Government really dropped the ball on the snow plowing and this had sealed the previous Mayor's doom. Electric blackouts does happen-- but it never shows on your bill (you still pay the same amount, even as we had experience when you have 11 days of no electricity).
At that same time, Spokane was getting tons of feet more of snow than Seattle (7 feet?)--- you heard how they handle it as a community, everyone helping each other out.
