Thumbs down Where can I live in Ft Lewis off post?

I am moving to Ft Lewis in 2 weeks. I have some questions and hope I can be helped. My first choice was to live on post, because I have a 10 year old. But then I changed my mind since I heard about all the rules they have for on post housing PLUS it would be nice for my daughter to not have to share her room with guests visiting us.

Which area would be a good area to rent? Not to far from post. 3 bedroom apartment preferably.

Which areas should I avoid? And which school would she have to go to...I rather have her go to school on post.

Dupont & Lacey may work for you. Depending on how far you are willing to commute you may want to check into Yelm as well. Avoid Lakewood (IMHO). Do a search on this board as well as I believe there have been others before you looking for this information. Godd luck to you, and thank you for your service.

Thank you very much. I did check on the board, found some information but not everything I am looking for. I will check out more about Lacey and Dupont.

I'd recommend Dupont, Lacey or Steilacoom. Close to post, all the amenities close by and good schools.

Thanks Sandy. It has been 7 years since I have been to the States. Just wondering.......do the apartments come with washmachines? I have been spoilt here living on post.

Many apartments come with washers and dryers. Some apartment complexes have laundry facilities. Unlike in Germany, the Army housing office does not provide washers and dryers, or furniture.

I hope your move goes smoothly.

Try to avoid the complexes with "laundry facilities" unless you want to babysit your laundry. I had clothes stolen from the dryer by a fellow apartment resident when I lived in University Place. I've since moved to a place where I have my own washer and dryer. Sometimes those community laundry facilites aren't the best and you have to be careful of what may have previously been in the washer/dryer. And I lived in a well-kept apartment community. Unfortunately, you can't control tenant's behavior, so, keep that in mind.

Sumericansoldier,

Sorry, the Army doesn't provide furniture for on-post family housing at Ft. Lewis. I don't know of any CONUS installation that does. I'd recommend checking out the AAFES furniture store, furniture rental places, Craigslist, or Walmart. There are also quite a few Goodwill stores in the area that have furniture. For on-post housing info, check this site:
