Very diverse area. Lots of older, somewhat neglected areas and tons of new growth. Quite a strong military presence as it's so close to McChord AFB. It has a pretty rough reputation, but like anywhere there are some bad places and some very nice places.
I think that the Tacoma News Tribune is probably the best paper for coverage.

Spanaway is an older suburb. A lot of homes were built in the 70's and 80's but there are newer house developments as well. The main road through Spanaway is Pacific Ave/Hwy 7. It is a hodge podge of older buildings, strip malls, and newer stores (Walgreens, Home Depot, grocery stores). It is not a very attractive street in my opinon, though they did finish some upgrades about a year ago to make it look a little nicer. Pac Ave. is also known for traffic. Most of Spanaway lacks sidewalks. Spanaway and Parkland (just north of Spanaway) were also the epicenter for the meth problems years ago, though I think it has died down alot. The western part of Spanaway near Spanaway Loop Road is not to bad. I would say if you really wanted to live in the Spanaway area go to the Fredrickson area just east of Spanaway. If you want more city go to Tacoma.
