Default water in the Mount Vernon area

considering the Mount vernon Wa. area but would like to know about the water in the area. Is the well water drinkable or do you have to be on city or use bottle water? We like to be just outside the city areas so that we can raise our chickens and such and that is why we were wondering about the well water. I know that on Whidbey you either have city water or bottled water as the well water is not very good.
