I wonder why they didn't choose a California-style number format. 1ABC234. Or even A123BCD? It seems it would be much less confusing and easier to remember than the 1A23BCD format... It'd be easier to remember it if it were one of the former ones, for example if you were trying to grab a license plate number from a hit-and-run or something. But I guess it is easier to tell apart from the older numbering scheme for law enforcement? Maybe?

That new license plate looks confusing. Perhaps they should put a space between the first two characters and the last five.
IMO the way ID numbers its plates makes sense, and identifies plates by county, while also giving more possible combinations. What is WA's reasoning for needing a numbering system with 350 million possible number/letter combinations?

Have you seen the number of people from Arizona, California and Florida asking about moving here? We'll be lucky if we don't have to widen the tags to accommodate an eighth digit.

Well, yeah.
But, 350,000,000 is overkill. That's a car for every American (including kids) and another 50,000,000 for good measure.
For WA to exhaust its license plate numbers (now), every single American would have to move to WA, and they would have to make sure that there would be a car for each person in the household. In addition, another 50,000,000 people would need to migrate in from foreign countries.
Even if all of AZ, CA and FL moved to WA, there'd still be a plethora of license plate numbers available.

I don't care what they do with the license plates as long as they don't change the size or the spacing between the screws.

Just wait till you need to change plates in WY: 4% use tax from outta state + 1.5% of MSRP - Kelly Blue Book on remaining value. And, the increase in your insurance - yeah - you'll love it!
