Default Washington license plates to get longer

Anyday now you will start seeing 7-digits on general issue Washington license plates for the first time. Is this a sign that our population has now made the big-time? (California went to 7 digits sometime in the early 80's).

Projected population for 2010 is 6.8 million, 2015 is 7.3 million, and 2020 7.7 million.

Is this too many people for you? Will you consider moving out of the State because of this increase?

No, General Washington would be in the Military history thread .

I've never ascribed much to the expert's population growth projections but I do know that where I live, it's too close to Seattle and Bellevue for them not to encourage density. I think it's just a matter of time before my neighbors subdivide and here will be many more houses...And if some slimy developer wants to wave a million dollars in my face so he can build 4 or 5 ugly houses where my house currently stands? He can have it. I'll take the money and run.

as an outsourced tool and diemaker, I will have to leave due to WA going to 'printed' rather than embossed plates. Major tacky, for the price. My old beater truck was $174 to renew today. When the $35 law was enacted my fees on beater Rabbits went from $17 to $42. I'm not impressed, but WA has much bigger fish to fry.

Missouri only has 1 milllion less population (or so) than Washington. We have 6 digit plates but recently went from A-Z on first three digits and 0-9 on the other three, to A-Z or 0-9 on all 6 digits (IIRC), which brings the permutations to over 2 billion plates. Somehow I doubt every man woman and child has 350+ cars. Are there 2 billion vehicles in Washington?

Why go to 7 digits when one can just go to variable digits (either letters or numbers for every part of the plate #)

In Washington, plates are replaced every seven or so years, so it isn't totally about population.

Yes, this is a cash grab.

Besides, where would one go? Wyoming? North Dakota?

The 7-digit WA license plate is coming very soon. Latest spottings are well into the ___-Z__ numbers. Maybe there should be a prize for the first spotting!

I have never been able to remember my license plate numbers so it doesn't matter to me how long they are as long as they still fit in the provided spot.

I got mine this month. Forcing people to change tags is such a blatant money grab, but that's how we roll in Washington.
