Why not live in Bremerton since you will be working there? Bremerton has a very nice downtown, and you can just take the ferry to Seattle. You can walk on the ferry or drive on. If you walk on, it is free to cross over to Seattle, and it only costs $6.50 to come back to Bremerton. I'm not sure of the costs to drive a car. The ferry takes about 40 minutes. From Tacoma it takes about the same amount of time, except you are driving, and if the traffic is bad it's going to take you an hour and a half.
The problem with living in Tacoma is that you are going to have to pay the bridge toll everyday for work. And to tell you the truth, the drive from Tacoma to Seattle is not a fun one, especially if you will be driving during rush hour. (Although, they have just built the sounder train which you can catch in Tacoma. That is, if you live downtown or near the very limited light rail train.)
If you must live in Tacoma, I would suggest 98402. I live at this zipcode. I consider this to be one of the best zipcodes, but anywhere in North Tacoma is probably going to be nice. The thing about Tacoma is that one block may be nice, and then the next block will be crappy. You really will have to look at each individual apartment and the area it's in to decide where you want to live.

According to the sounder website they offer free parking, so you could park and ride to Seattle even without using the light rail. This is something I am considering in case I get a job in Seattle.

Thanks again for all the information. Well I will definitely visit 98402 as well. As far as Bremerton is concerned it was a nice place and I will be working there but I would like to live some where closer to seattle. Advantage for tacoma is that you can go to seattle by road anytime and not be dependent on ferry even at nightime and it will be cheap as well. Me and my wife plan to start some research at UW later this year so a reliable access to seattle is important.

Hi all, i am a newcomer, looking for a house in tacoma, i would like to know if any of you know anything about this street:
E 47th Street Tacoma, WA 98404
I have read it is really bad in that zip, and read some articles and most were negative about the mckinley ave, and everything point out that the salihan neighbourhood is really one of the worse if it is not the worst.....
Please shed some light, tell me if i am making the biggest mistake of my life if i bought a home there. Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't even consider living in this neighborhood. There are a lot of other areas in Tacoma that are still considerably cheap but not in a bad area. This area is known for violence, burglaries, and sometimes shootings. stay out of this area.

Actually I posted the crime stats for Salishan on another post comparing it to Proctor District. Salishan and the surrounding area had less crime.

I've always been a little partial to the University Place/Curtis High School area near the Sound. A 1960's/70's older suburb, but still quite nice, probably a little more expensive than most areas around T-town.
