Granite Falls used to be a bit more rural, but that is rapidly changing; lots of new houses, and more of a commuter feel in those areas. I would take issue with the statement that the schools in Granite Falls are not the best... they may not be "the best", but they have SUBSTANTIALLY improved over the past several years. I know this is true, because I am married to a teacher in the Granite Falls district, and who went there specifically because he wanted to make a difference. There were others at about that same time, who also went there to create change. It has happened, and there are nationally awarded teachers in that district, now... as well as a fabulous brand new high school, and a new attitude in the entire community to make the schools and the community the very best it can be; lots of involvement and interest.
What you will also find, however, is that weatherwise, Granite Falls is very nearly the "Forks" of the east side. The Puget Sound locally famous "convergence zone" for weather practically centers itself at Granite Falls, and runs straight up the beautiful Mountain Loop Hwy, and you can count on at least an inch of increased rainfall for every mile you go further up the road from Granite Falls... you will have increased rain and increased snow in the winter. We found this out the hard way... we lived "up the Loop" the first years we were there.
We no longer live in the district. As for amenities, Lake Stevens is nearly "next door" as is Everett, and you can find anything you need in either place. Granite Falls does have the endless gravel trucks, because a big part of the local employment is granite and gravel, unless the economy has changed that... so be prepared for windshield repairs or replacements on a semi-regular basis. But it has much improved the reputation it had just a few years ago, and deserves newcomers who are wanting to be involved in their community.
Best of luck to you!
