In southern California, surfing takes place in the warm sun on a soft sandy beach.
If you have a serious wipe out and get washed up on the beach, a rippled muscle Adonis and a dozen bikini clad beauties will rush to your aid.
At Westport, surfing is a survival exercise in fogbound freezing water.
If you have a wipe out here, you will be smashed to bits on the rocks and eaten by the seagulls.
The remains of your surfboard will wash up on the beach at Ocean Shores where the beachcombing natives will collect them and hang them on their fences along with broken crab trap floats and pieces of driftwood.

Nothing more adorable than a fenceline full of driftwood, broken crab trap floats, and human remains.

You guys! Okay, if you are a surfer, you will surf. We all know this. And there ARE surfers "doing their thing" in both Washington and Oregon. However, no kidding, a full wetsuit is a MUST. Hypothermia is not a vague possibility in these Northern Pacific waters, it is a guarantee, without a wetsuit, within minutes. The riptides are seriously bad in a number of places. While in some places in the world, if you got caught by a riptide, you could ride it down and swim parallel to the shore until you could work your way in to the beach again, this is NOT high on the list of probabilities here. The shore could be rock cliff, with no way to climb it!
Your best bet for surfing here is to stick to known areas, have a wetsuit, have a surf buddy, and tell someone else where you are going and when to expect you back. That way if something bad happens, at least they know where to start searching.
