I'm moving to Tacoma next month, and I'm curious about the quality of the tap water. Do most people use a water filter or is the water fine right out of the tap? I've lived in places with horrible tap water (hello Florida!), so I don't think it could get much worse than that.

I dont really have a problem with the tap water, but I moved from a place that had high sodium deposits in the water. I currently drink filtered water but that's because my rental place has installed it.

I live in Milton (about 5 miles east of Tacoma) and our tap water is excellent.. We always had horrible tap water in SoCal (Riverside), so it's nice to just get a cup out and turn on the tap and guzzle some good water..

The tap water in Tacoma is bad. It is yellow. I would personally recommend that you purchase a good water filter. I use "Pure," and it works well.

Not sure about Tacoma and other towns, but Seattle is supposed to have some of the highest-quality tap water among major U.S. cities. I would guess that that many of the 'burbs would be in a similar situation. Of course, the age of your home (and more specifically that of your pipes) will play a role also.
