Default Forbes ranks Olympia area among top 10 places for business and careers

Has anyone read the Forbes story? I would be interested in hearing members opinions and thoughts on Olympia/South Sound as a place to live and work.

I know several people who live there, in fact talked to one of them yesterday.

Getting crowded, more expensive, basically the same as the rest of the region or so I'm led to believe by many long time residents.

I wonder what they're using for criteria. For certain fields (medical) that might be true...

The economy (imo) is not that strong in Olympia (no comparison to Tacoma or Seattle). Last summer the state put a freeze on all new hires in the area. It's probably been removed by now though (with that huge RE tax surplus the state received in 06). Technical jobs are few and far between. There is quite a bit of raw industry though and firms that live off the government teet. Plenty of lawyers.

Olympia has grown *tremendously* over the past two years. Many upscale stores were built last summer right next to the mall, and with three home depots within 6 miles of each other, you have to assume there are big plans for the area.

There are still the signs calling Olympia an "All American City", but I'm sure that sign will be lose it's meaning as it becomes an extension of the I5 corridor monster.

There are quite a few threads here on the board about the area. It's been discussed extensively.
