Default Advice on Bremerton WA/ Good places to live relatively Close to Naval Hospital

Hello all,

My wife is a Navy Corpsman and we are thinking of requesting Bremerton Naval Hospital for our next duty station.(Doesn't mean well get it but we are considering putting it first to try a new area to live in).

Is there any advice on where one would live. A nice community with good schools (We will have two school age kids by then) and a reasonable commute for my wife to the base. I work out of the home so where we live is not a problem for me,but I like for my wife to have an easy drive if possible.

(Just an FYI , we would be in the market for a house in the price range of up to $250,000 which from what I've seen can buy alot of house in Bremerton area.)

I'd also like to hear from any prior or current military families that have been stationed in Bremerton. How did you like the area or not like the area. How were the schools? etc, etc. Now I know I'll take the answers with a grain of salt but I do like to have kind of an idea of a place before we get there.

We have live in Va.Beach ,Va ,Norfolk , Va, San Diego,Ca (loved it) and now the DC area (Bethesda Naval Hospital Maryland). We liked it out West when we were in San Diego and although we know the weather is nothing like San Diego in Washington State we'd like to experience another part of the country. But we don't want to move to someplace where the schools are horrible or just not a good place to raise a family.

Thanks in advance and look forward to some replys..................

Pcghost is on a distinguished road
I was briefly stationed in Bremerton back in the 90's, and I drive through it to get out to the coast annually. There are worse places to be, but I would suggest living in Poulsbo or one of the Ports to the North of Bremerton proper. It is a great shipyard, but it has a very shipyardy effect on the town. The surrounding towns are great though. Working in Bremerton and living on the outskirts could be pretty nice.

MKWife is on a distinguished road
We just moved to Bremerton a couple of weeks ago,My husband is stationed in Seattle and taking the ferry over.
We have been to the Navy base a few times and it is a nice sized base with lots of amenities and it does have housing if that is an option for you.
We currently live in E. Bremerton and the neighborhood we live in is very nice and quit and we love it here so far.
The weather has been nice and cool and hasn't reached over 75 since we have been here,it hasn't really rained, just a few sprinkles here and there.
If you have any questions I would be glad to help out if I can.
Good Luck!!!

Thanks MKwife , Like I said in my original post we're exploring different duty stations and of course may not get any that we choose. But I like to get a feel for a place ahead of time in case we get sent there and we thought Washington State would be a change and a new place we've never been before and try it out. We also thought it would be a good place to be if my wife gets out early and we would be on the West coast already because we'd like to settle in San Diego someday for good. Yes we are going to put down San Diego as well , but since she has been stationed there before we didn't know what the likely hood of getting it again would be?

My only other question is how are the schools there? Oh and we never go for base housing. We prefer to buy out in the communities somewhere when we can. Thanks for your help and if you can give your opinion of the school system there in Kitsap county that would be appreciate very much too.

Thanks,
bunky

Illahee is on a distinguished road
I live in E. Bremerton and enjoy my "neck of the woods" here in the Illahee area. I am a registered nurse and drive to Poulsbo each day to work. My husband is employed by the shipyard in Bremerton and he is also an Officer in the Navy Reserve, commuting to Everett one weekend a month for his duty. We are ok with Bremerton and do like our home and neighborhood. Our kids aren't school aged yet, but there are plenty of private options if you don't like the public schools here. I hear good things about the Central Kitsap School District, which would be in the Silverdale area. As it stands now for us, we plan to send our child to a private Lutheran school that is nearby when that day arrives!

Illahee thanks for the information. It looks like when the time comes to make up a wish list of duty stations we will probably put Bremerton on the list. Since we have to move every 3 to 5 years we like to try new places and it sounds like Washington State would be a good place to check out for our family. Sounds alot better than the Wash DC area we are in now, can't wait to leave !!!

Thanks,
bunky
