Fort Lewis as a nurse?
What is it like as a nurse? I'm assuming you don't get to live "on base" or get any assistance as a civilian employee right? We are moving there and know nothing of the area. We are looking 2 rent. Anyone with any suggestions or ideas? Is this one of the area in WA where you don't NEED a car? I read Dupont is good right? There are many many threads but none are from the perspective of working as a nurse. I've applied what I could but I would like to hear from someone in the medical field pov
ANY replies are appreciated PLEASE

I can't imagine you wouldn't need a car around there. Getting anywhere off post you have to travel the highway, so a car would be good.
I have no clue what it is like to work on post, but I have lived there. Madigan has it's own gat so you get straight there fro the highway.
Dupont is near and nice but a relatively small community and a bit pricey. Stellicom is right next door, and also pricey. (Both are located south of the hospital)
Not sure what else I can tell you......

Well thank you both very much although I was expecting the area to be on some sort of bus line.

The Pierce transit Bus Welcome to Pierce Transit gets anywhere you need to go stops right in front of the emergency room.

Madigan is a nice hospital, I spent 10 days there as a patient. I have 2 friends that work there. I personally cannot fathom not having a car and working/living in that area, it is a car dependent area. We're not talking downtown Seattle or anything like that.
Good luck with the job, I'm trying to apply there myself.
Take care
Tony

I have read a lot more and people are saying Tacoma has a lot of gangsters and is really run down?
mod cut: link removed
Is there anywhere else you would suggest moving if this is true?

Tacoma is a pretty good sized city, and it has it's good and bad parts. If I were looking around that area, my suggestion would be Lacey. I lived there for a couple of years, and it was a pretty quiet place. I thought it was nice...
Lakewood, Tacoma, you gonna find a bit of everything. Lakewood is worse than Tacoma though.....

Tacoma has a population of over 250,000 people. There are some not so nice places in the city and there are some great places. The surrounding towns of University Place, Lakewood, Puyallup, Steilacoom, Dupont, Lacey, Roy, Yelm and Olympia (among others) offer a huge variety of living space.
I see you list Richmond, VA as home right now. Tacoma is no worse (or better) than Richmond crime wise. There is no place in Tacoma that I avoid during the day.
