I was born and grew up in New England. I always felt that the pervasive sense of history and tradition created a repressive conformity that held down individual expression and creativity.
I left there in 1960 and never went back. While it's true that there are areas in the Pacific Northwest where the landscape and architecture are similar to New England coastal towns, that's where the similarity ends.
Even with the problems of growth and development and the modern trend toward national homogenization, the Pacific Northwest still represents, to me, the last frontier where an individual can truly experience the freedom that comes from the merging of his soul with the Earth.
