Safest area in Mount Vernon
I am moving to Mount Vernon next month. I have read and heard there are some sketchy areas. Which ones should I avoid? Is there even any truth to the rumors about Mount Vernon being a, for lack of a better term, ****hole?
How is it living close to downtown Mount Vernon? How about east Mount Vernon?
Thanks for all your help!!!

Hi. Sometimes I want to live in a sweet, quiet, beautiful, farm-y kind of place. When I do, Mount Vernon is one of my top choices. Sweet, calm...
It's a smallish town with fewer than 32,000 people. Parts are older, parts are younger. Here's the City-Data.com page chock full of data on Mount Vernon including crime info:

I don't know where you've gotten negative information about this lovely place. I've lived in western WA for 25 years and can't remember ever hearing a negative statement or news story about Mount vernon.

A relatively isolated city with a relatively small population should not have the level of crime it has. Perhaps it is related to ethnic strife: the area afterall is approaching 30% hispanic population. The town also lies in a drug corridor (between Seattle and Vancouver, BC). The negative forum posts alone do not prove or disprove anything, but taken with the data, it would seem to support your fears. A pity really, because the valley seems like a gem.

Mt. Vernon is surrounded by some great towns. La Conner and Anacortes to name a few. The town itself certainly has its share of nice areas. I now live about 1/2 way between Mt. Vernon and Bellingham on the South End of Lake Sammish. I love it. I can get to Mt. Vernon in 12 minutes or Bellingham in 10.
Were I live, many people don't lock their doors.

There are some areas in Mt.Vernon that are flood prone. You might find more info searching for something like "skagit FEMA flood plain maps".
