Bremerton is a U.S. Navy town. I'm sure there are nice areas of Bremerton. I'm a woman who has lived in Seattle and Bellevue for 25 years, and I would never live in Bremerton. Not a great choice, I feel, for your situation.
Clinton, Langley and Coupeville, NOT Oak Harbor which is military, are towns to look for on Whidbey Island. Good Montessori schools on Whidbey.

FWIW, Poulsbo is every bit as much a "Navy town" as Bremerton, and more so than Oak Harbor by far. Ever hear of Keyport? Bangor?
I don't know why you imply that the OP should stay away from "military towns", but if you really feel that way, you shouldn't recommend anywhere in Kitsap County at all.

All this talk of Poulsbo has me wondering if Polusbo RV and the accompanying commercials with the old guy are still around.

Hmmm....I disagree. I have lived in both Bremerton and Oak Harbor...yes they are Navy towns, but as an educated professional (with a retired Navy spouse), I love both of these places and hope to move back soon! You don't have to be in the military to appreciate these towns.
As far as raising kids, I grew up in Bremerton and I turned out just fine if I do say so myself!
C'mon...don't dis the hard-working military who make unbelievable sacrifices for the rest of us!
And for what it's worth....Oak Harbor (Whidbey Island) is one of the most BEAUTIFUL places I have ever lived!

You mean the commercials with former KOMO-TV sportscaster Bruce King, as the old guy?
Not sure, but most likely. Bruce may be an old guy, but he was extremely well-known on the Seattle TV airwaves on Channel 4. He even moved to WABC New York for awhile around 1980, but came back to his beloved Seattle. (More trivia...Bruce replaced ABC legend Keith Jackson as the main KOMO-TV sportscaster in the 60's!)

I remember Bruce King, but I don't think he did the commercials I'm referring to, though I could be wrong.
I'm thinking 1990's here, it was a pretty nondescript commercial, y'know, the typical local TV fare.
