Kitschy? uh, yes...any town with a Bavarian-themed McDonalds is kitschy.

Leavenworth is a great place if you take the time to meet the "locals" and explore the outdoors. If you like shopping in tourist based shops you will have your heaven, there are more than Kona Hawaii. I haven't gone in but a few but love to raft, kayak, hike, venture out of the town. The people are really great and fun. The outdoors offer many things year round.

Leavenworth bemuses me. It's not like it has any authentic tie to Germany other than what it has created for itself. In short, they woke up one day and decided to play German; they could just as easily have chosen Scottish, French or Bosnian. It's a completely manufactured product, an otherwise typical north Cascades town that has essentially transformed itself into a theme park. At least Bingen, when it was going through its Rhenish village phase, had a namesake in Germany along a river of comparable volume. I guess they stopped bothering with that in Bingen when sailboarding blew into the area and started leaving money laying around.

Yes, but the people love it!
Wineries in Woodinville??
The Matterhorn in Disneyland??
The Wineries in Woodinville still bother me to some extent. But it is just the genius of this country that if attractions are too far away to visit. We will just move the attraction to you!!
They are not any better or worse than Leavenworth. Just different.
Leavenworth provides a very attractive urban setting for visitors. Sadly that is what is missing in American towns.
Really that is the attraction, the German setting is just a gimmick to get you to visit the first time.

Which demonstrates to my satisfaction that there's no accounting for taste. In eastern Washington, the only thing more retarded than ersatz Deutch Leavenworth as a concept is Yakima calling itself the Palm Springs of Washington.
I visited Leavenworth once, as a kid. Every time since, I was dragged by women.

Wow, A elietest and sexiest comment in one post!!!
Do you feel the same way when you visit the "wineries" in Woodenville??
The good people of Yakima went so far as to buy a billboard ad in Palm Springs. It said..."Palm Springs the Yakima of California".
Now that is showing some class!!

Did someone deny you oxygen at birth? It's not sexist to state that women dragged me there if, in fact, they did. Which they did. Elitist? At least I can spell it.
I guess I could not tell you how I felt when I visited the "wineries" (not sure you need quotes around that). I have not visited them. I never got out to Woodinville much, and am not sure why you're even bringing that up.

We finally vistied this past weekend for the Autumn Fest. It was ok, something to see but not enough to take me back. The town is cute and VERY themed, we did enjoy the shops and the scenery. We were most excited for the drive there thru the mountains, but were disapointed.
