Is it me, or does Puyallup have lots of troublemakers?
Right now, I'm staying with my sister in Puyallup until my next job pulls through. So far, this is the only place in Washington I really don't like. TBH, I feel safer in Federal Way, or even White Center! I've been to White Center at night on foot and no one bothers me, but why not Puyallup? If it matters, I'm right by Peirce College.
Ever since I've been there, almost every night I hear some moron burning rubber and speeding outside between 11PM and 2AM. I'm really surprised no one calls the police to put a stop to that. I've seen evidence if car break-ins near my other sister's apartment which initially sent off some signals there. Making things worse, I noticed that there are punks that run the streets looking for trouble. My nephew got chased by 6 dudes with baseball bats for no reason (and yes, he's black). At first they yelled insults at him and his friend on their way from school, and his friend yelled back, so the car stopped and they jumped out with baseball bats. It starts to get annoying hearing stupid kids doing drive by yellings and what not. Last night, one called me a "homo" and sped off (probably because I wear a full length leather trench coat). I normally don't hear what they actually say to me, but I think one called me a "blood murderer" in another one of many drive by yellings or something like that. So far, they appear to be nothing but cowards, sissies, wannabes and [I know this is a strong word, but] pussies... and they wouldn't last long in my old neighbourhood. None of them have the guts to say anything to my face. For stuff like this, this is one place I wouldn't live without the ownership of guns.
So, anyone else experience stuff like this? Or is it my coat causing all the ruckus? Stuff like this never happens to me anywhere in WA, except here.

Ive only been to Puyallup a few times, but it does have a criminal element that a lot of people do not think about. Seattle city folk usually do not like to think of anywhere outside the more 'urban' poor areas of Seattle, South King and Tacoma as bad, but Puyallup and Enumclaw are prett rough.
Not the most 'tolerant' of people. This isnt everyone there, but it seems to be the remnant of the 'old farm population' who arent part of the neo suburbanite former tacomans who moved there. There have been a few hate crimes there, most I think on Mexicans but also a few against black people. Likewise as is the standard, such people are not very welcoming to anyone they perceive as possibly gay (meaning anyone who walks up right, doesnt chew tobacco, or drive a loud dirty truck, or is not into Meth). Meth is a big problem there too, so I hear.
I wouldnt move there, but mainly because I cant stand suburbs, and even if Puyallup is more of a yokelly suburb, its still suburban.

Puyallup troublemakers
Hi Blueshogun,
I am so sorry to hear that your nephew has been terrorized by punks in Puyallup! There have been some absolutely horrifying incidents which have made the news, but I shudder to think how many have not. Despite the big McMansions built to draw the yupsters, and the false feeling that Puyallup is somehow safer than other areas, as you see..it "ain't necessarily so." It is still home to a large number of those with a redneck mentality. Just a hop and skp over in Fife, the skinheads often hold yearly conventions! I know this will be protested by some of the gentrified residents of Puyallup, but it's widely known, and has been published in the paper.
You would feel much better if you moved to Tacoma or another outlying area, in my humble opinion.
As I've written elsewhere, Tacoma had an undeserved reputation...but school incidents such as your nephew experienced are not as likely, if there have been any I haven't heard of them. Of course you'd want to see and check out the schools. There are always some which are better than others.
There is a great deal more diversity here. I've spoken with others who are pleased to find that their ethnicity isn't an issue, as it has been in other places where they've lived. Of course, you would want to research the area in which you'd live.
I've found the northwest part of Tacoma to be quiet, and there are several
schools to choose from.
I wish you the best, and hope that your family is soon in a safer area.
catz.

Wow, I'm glad it wasn't just me. We drive through Puyallup every so often and have stopped for the farmer's market and some other things, and it gives me the willies. It reminds me SO much of Shawnee, Oklahoma -- or really almost anywhere in Oklahoma. Just the brief time we've spent there people have given us crap for no reason, and we are your average white family of three in a honda. So, I doubt it's you, too.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this. I checked the crime rates, and they've risen from 2003-04. Eventually I plan to move to Seattle for the video game industry. I'll be looking for places to stay up there soon.
