Congratulations, Ivan from Vegas
I think it is a great time for you to get out of Vegas, with an infant. Sorry about the hard time dealing with rental management companies.

I lived in So. CA, San Bernardino/redlands area, a 4 hour drive due west of Vegas. Unless I could afford to live in a Ritzy area there, I wouldn't want to raise kids there.

Just yesterday I decided to open Eastern WA in my relocation search. Currently I am in Minnesota and the humidity is tough. While living in CA I visited friends along the beach - would walk alone for 2 hours after Nov. and before they became croweded again in late spring. What a life! But now the dampness is a major factor and I look forward to the desert.

Have you found any place with pictures of the TC area? I am interested in seeing some. I had narrowed my search to Reno, NV or Albuqerque, high deserts. The crime in both is a concern for me. Needing access to good doctors, I can't be out in the country. Don't need world class researchers, but some docs who will take the time to get to know their patients. In Ca this only happened outside of HMOs.

I had crossed all of WA list due to cost but discover it may still be in the running. I looked at the Oregon forums here and it was not encouraging. Eastern OR seemed depressed.
Some are happy there, but I couldn't tell about medical care, etc.

Hopefully, we learn as we live... the monthly costs of living where I am now are significantly higher than in CA, which I didn't consider as I had lived in CA for 21 years. Food, clothes, misc. goods, services are higher. I never liked all that stuff in CA - dizzying parking lots and all - but some access is important. I am sure you have considered that, Vegas does have access to "economies of scale" bargains.

Does anyone have photos they could post here? Does anyone know of apts. that are managed by honest, reputabile people?

Good luck, Ivan.

Default Ocean Shores is a beautiful Oceanside community!

Ocean Shores is a gorgeous resort community on the Pacific Ocean! You cannot compare it to a large city. If you do not need the nightlife of the big city and are ready to slow your heart rate, move out to a little town ON THE OCEAN and beach comb for the rest of your life, it is a wonderful place to live! It has evolved into a residential community and is a work in progress!

We don't know where "Ryan" has gotten his information, but rest assured, he is misinformed. How awful to be so full of rage! There is a designated section in city for older manufactured homes-they are not strewn throughout city. There are NO manufactured homes next to a million dollar home in Ocean Shores as there are only a handful of million dollar homes to begin with and believe us, there are no Oceanfront old mfg'd homes!! NONE!

Last year, when Seattle was ravaged by a huge wind storm, Ocean Shores lost no more than 10 trees to the storm and power was out for less than a day (our was not out at all as we own a generator). My inlaws in Bellevue, WA were out of power for 5 days! In the 4 years which we have lived here, power has only gone out a handful of times. Yes, we are out of the way and on the way to nowhere, so you must take care and ready your family with an emergency pack and generator-you are on the Ocean!

We have lived here since 2003 and have never regretted our move to this beautiful area as we love walking the beach, golfing 18 holes, hiking through the rain forest which is nearby and boating/fishing on Duck Lake! When not at work, we are on VACATION and didn't have to drive to get there! Yes, there are sunnier areas on the Pacific Ocean, but not at these prices-our real estate prices cannot be beat! It is not for everyone as you need to be able to afford the lifestyle, but if you can, it is an incredible place to spend the rest of your life!

Hello. Ocean? This is Fred.
I hear a lot of ice is melting and giving you more water.
A couple of years ago I built a house at Ocean Shores.
I'm not on your beach, I'm a few blocks back in the woods.
How much time do I have before you gobble up those ugly condos and tourist hotels on the beach and make my yard into beachfront property?

Default Westport and Long Beach don't have all these amenities!

Ocean Shores also has a police force of 14 full-time officers.

All utilities are at street in front of every lot so building is convenient in Ocean Shores.

With 75 miles of waterfront properties, including Ocean, Bay, Canal and Lakefront, your options are endless!

Hello all,
I can tell you what Ocean Shores was in 1964, and I can tell you what it
was supposed to become, then, after my visit 2 months ago, I can give you my impression.
My family moved to Ocean Shores in 1964 to be with our father who was dredging the marina at Ocean Shores. We bought and moved a mobile home for our one year. We moved it to the one and only mobile court.About 15 or 20 trailors were there. There were scattered smaller homes on the 6 mile spit, and some large ones on the beach.
My first job was working at the Ocean Shores Inn,( the second one of 1/2 dozen that have been built). I believe the idea the developers had ,was to make OS into a Northern Palm Springs.Everything was coming into place, except the weather. This has always put the damper on OS for a long term resort experiance. In 1965 the Pat Boone golf classic was thought to bring investors and money. This was an annual event for 2 years I believe. I lived in the area about 4 years including Aberdeen, and made a number of visits, through the years, the last one about 15 years ago, until 2 months ago.
I was very surprised to see OS had not grown much in the 15 years since I had last visited.
The Marina looked much worse,(no restaurant, run down) than it did in 1966.Although the weather was nice, there was not many people out for a day in August.

I did get somewhat home sick, OS was a real playground for a teenager in 1966.
I have noticed the home prices are much lower, than the surrounding areas father
East. As I read in a previous post about a rising sea, I am a believer of Global Warming,
and although my income is a pension and I could live their if I chose, I wonder what OS
may look like in 20 years? If the Glaciers keep melting at the rate they are, Maybe the little 6 mile sandspit will be habitable for fish only. Just a note... We used to find large
flotillas of glass balls washed up on the beach.
To any one living at OS, I can understand why you like it. It was always a joy to
walk on the beach on a stormy winter evening, my personal favorite time.

Default Life at the beach-what fun!

[quote=Arleigh-20;1606350]Hello all,

Arleigh,

You must have had so much fun here as a teen! My 85 yr old friend remembers flying in to airport on Chance A La Mer and towing plane to her home with a truck! Another friend remembers when paved road ended at Chance. Our full-time population has grown to 6000. Still no need for stop lights. If you have time, please post more of your favorite memories!

We are building approx 225 new homes per year! Duck Lake Drive is changing monthly as clearing and new homes are being built. It is wonderful how this community is developing into a residential jewel on the Ocean.

Back in the day, Ocean Shores was referred to as "The Venice of the Northwest!" with it's elaborate canal system. We feel so fortunate to live in such a gorgeous area. We love our Lakefront property and fishing in Duck Lake near the Weatherwax property-so beautiful and peaceful.

The Quinault nation purchased the Marina and have had plans to revamp area for some time. Unfortunately, those plans remain on paper only at this time.

Do you remember the Johnson Merchantile in Copalis? We purchase the owner's son's home. A logging truck dumped it's logs on his vehicle, he almost died, and with his settlement from the accident, he built a custom Locke home and planted 1/2 acre of gardens in 1980. The garden is incredible today, with 200 trees and a beautiful sea of green grass. We are the keepers of this property and have named the home "Shangri La."

We love walking through the Weatherwax property and enjoying the wildlife which is abundant! The deer and fawns are precious and the racoons are too cute.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I can coast down memory lane for most experiances, some are better kept in my skeleton closet.
My wife and I were very impressed with the State campgound. It was very clean,
a place for tents and not to crowded.
When the Pat Boone Golf classic was in town for the two years I worked at the OS Inn 1964-1966,
there were many of the days TV and Movie stars all over.
A friend of mine (who stayed in OS,and became a builder) and myself were pulling
duty at the golf pro shop flipping burgers for the stars. A waitress who was also behind the counter with us ,was turned around from the counter and complaining about how rude Jack Palance was to her the nite before at the Inn. We looked up from the burger grill and guess who was standing at the counter waiting to order. Bad boy Jack.
While she kept complaining, Jack, my friend, and I were beginning to laugh. When she turned around after her Jack tirade, She shown brilliant red like the sun.

Another Friend of mine who I visited in Moses Lake, on the same trip to OS, lived in Ocean Shores and was another good friend. His father was a contracter using heavy equipment. His father built all off the first roads, that were the backbone of the beginning of the road system.

Well I do not want to wear out my welcome, so I will stop.

Next time I will mention the stormy nights and glass floats, washed up whales and seals, and weighing salmon for the derby when I worked at the Marina.

A 20

Default Great story Arleigh!

Thanks for the great stories! You will never wear out your welcome with us, please tell more when you have time. We have a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, etc. from 1970 - present, which our friend (who is now 85 and is starting to eliminate clutter) has been keeping and has passed to us. May we include your stories from the 60's in our book? Please write more!

Double Happiness!

Yes, it is ok to use any story I may tell, as long as it doesn't send me to jail!
