Moving to Wa from Ca need advice on areas
My husband and I and our kids both boys age 9 and 15 are moving from Marysville, Ca to Wa. We have friends who live in McKenna as well as Spanaway. My question is how is Mc Kenna as far as crime, drugs etc and how about Spanaway near 224th and 46th st near Bethel HS. Also we were looking at Graham, Puyallup and Gig Harbor. I will be working in Tacoma, and my husband will be all over. We want to be kinda more in a country setting with in an neighborhood but not so close to neighbors you can reach out and topuch them. Any advice as far as good parts of Spanaway or others like closure to freeway or further out like near the Wal-Mart/Fred Meyers on 224th?
Help is appreciated to very impressionable boys want to keep away from drugs and gangs as much as possible. We will be renting for a short time as we are selling our Ca home.

It depends on if you are looking for more rural or suburban.
Mc Kenna can be quite rural and is very small. It does have a big, new public school that many parents are happy with. (I don't have school age kids)
It is across the river from Yelm and the difference is night and day. Yelm is experiencing explosive growth in both homes and retail. Yelm is on the Thurston County side of the river.
Often Mc Kenna is linked with the town of Roy when searching for real estate. I think you will find your real estate dollar will go farther in Mc Kenna, than the other areas you mentioned.
I really like Gig Harbor. It can be quite pricey and you will have to deal with commuting over the narrows bridge.
Let us know what you decide...

Anyway - are you looking for a place LIKE Marysville? What do you think you can afford?
I second Gig Harbor.

Yes kinda like MArysville, Ca little rural but not so much that i have to drive for 40 min to go to the store either. We are looking at about $1200-$1330 per month to rent for about 3 years.

Then I highly reccommend Puyallup - it's close to Tacoma and only about an hour (or so) from Seattle
All my friends that live there love it - and they say their kids love the school - there's even a college there too

relocating from Calif. to Washington
Greetings from Californians, who want to move to Washington!!
My husband and I are semi-"early"-retired, and have a 15 year old son. We would like to know what are great towns (i.e. Camas, La Center, Castle Rock, or others) that would be accepting, accommodating to my husband (Caucasin, and myself, African-American. We would love to live in a small town, secluded, -- on some land, as well as, a fantastic neighborhood that is wonderful for raising a teenager? We would like a fabulous high school for our son, that will be great to enhace his academic performance and lead to college preparation. Any positive comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

makenzie, I have started a new thread for you because this thread is specifically discussing Tacoma and the questions that the original poster was inquiring about.
A new thread for you will get more responses and will be directly related to your questions.
I will be deleting these last 2 posts shortly. Thanks!

I live in Puyallup and enjoy it. I am not familiar with Marysville, Ca. so cannot compare. Puyallup is really growing and does have traffic issues if you live south of the city (towards Graham).
Housing is expensive in the city and more reasonable as you move south. As mentioned, the schools are some of the best in the state and one reason why people move to the area.
Gig Harbor is nice yet the Narrows Bridge will have a Toll soon and should be considered when moving to the Penninsula.
Overall, I am happy with the area but rapid growth has it's drawbacks.
Spanaway has crime issues and I would not recommend it.

ChattyKat,
I grew up in University Place, Have you check that city out? The Official Website of The City of University Place
UP also offers great schools.. especially elementary and senior high school..
I went through public school and enjoyed them tremendously, but there are nice private schools too..
overall.. education standards are high, houses are little more expensive/ median income is generally higher than other parts of Tacoma.
Oh! If your husband is golfer he will enjoy http://www.chambersbaygolf.com
brand new golf course.. I believe opened this summer. I have not had a chance to play or see end result.. I saw beginning of the golf course building project about 3 years ago?? That was UP project, I saw pictures of it, can't wait to play!
well, happy searching!! if you have any questions let me know!
