Does anyone know anything about Bremerton?
I am curious about what Bremerton is like. I know it is known for its Navy Yard and that Quincy Jones once lived there. I have also heard about it having some issues with crime.

I lived in Bremerton for a very short time because I briefly had a position in Kitsap County. Bremerton is quite a mix of people, and from what I can see has a surprisingly large drug culture given the size of the city. I don't know that stats but I'd guess the crime rate is larger than what's to be expected for a city that size.
I don't think Bremerton would be too bad if you worked right in downtown Seattle and could commute by ferry. The downtown area of Bremerton seems to be improving too.
My experience was that the Navy presence was everywhere. When I was looking for an apartment there I constantly heard that the person before me was a Navy guy who had been reassigned.
When I was looking in Bremerton I did notice that the cost of rent and housing was less than Seattle. In Seattle I think you need at least $600 or $700 bare minimum to rent a one bedroom apartment, but it seems like in Bremerton there were more options towards the low end of $600 than in Seattle. Still seemed expensive for the kind of town it is.

Bremerton's not bad during the day, but at night, crime is an issue.
It seems like the town is trying really hard to improve that image, but what can you do, it's Bremerton.

It really depends on which part of Bremerton you are in. West Bremerton is worse than East Bremerton. But they are "working" to improve the downtown areas of town...
If you are thinking of moving over to the Bremerton area, you might be better off checking out Port Orchard, Silverdale, or Poulsbo (depending on the purpose of your move...).

I have family in Bremerton, right by Silverdale and it seems pretty nice to me.

I live in Bremerton at the moment. On two different occasions my car was broken into near the Brem. ferrie whilst I was in Seattle. However I've had no problems in my neighborhood. I'd say that the crime isn't as bad as many other places in the U.S., but Bremerton is certainly not the nicest place to live if you actually have money. Poulsbo is my personal favorite, a very charming town.

I lived there for about seven months, it's actually pretty nice and quiet, I didnt' see too much crime around, rentals and housing are pretty cheap, the only thing that I didn't like about Bremerton was that there isn't much going on. So it's pretty boring and pretty inconvient if you prefere to walk places to get groceries and stuff like that.

...THINGS ARE CHANGING HERE IN BREMERTON...
i'm not from here originally, when i moved here i was avised to look elsewhere as a single woman. i am glad i made the choice to live here: i came to find a killer upcoming & participatory art community in an optimistic and maleable urban environment, the setting is intimate enough to make a difference if you have a vision. i am not a hopeless optimist, there is crime here. it is, like any other place, speckled with "good" and "bad" areas, consciousness and knowing what areas to avoid are good practices to avoid misfortune in any town.
violent crime has gone down dramatically over the past few years, and i think we're surpassed by certain sections in seattle... on that note, teen pregnancy and drug use are no more dramatic than any other community per capita.
bremerton is the only school district to support it's levy while ck and south kitsap voted down their most recent leveys. bremerton's wasl scores are also high and on a steady increase with each year. i have worked with bremerton schools as a paraeducaor and recommend their attention to needs and easy to adapt programs.
...on the subject of education, i think it is important to note that the olympic college is transitioning into a four year college.
i have been in washington for eight years, bremerton for four. i just bought a house last year that is 15 min. from downtown with the intent on taking advantage of this growing community;
MAJOR projects are in effect and i can't tell you how excited i am about it!
• million dollar condos are in the finishing stages along our water front with 85% occupacy.
• a boardwalk stretch connecting downtown pedestrians to a 10 acre waterfront park with 2000' shoreline and boat dock is being built as i type.
• our marina is expanding to support 335 slips with 119 guest and 216 permanent spaces for your boat...
• this creates room for development of a grocery store downtown along with retail shops including rei, bookstores, dining, and boutique hotels! bremerton also hosts free wifi throughout its regions and an array of interactive water parks along the marina.
• bremerton is ALWAYS an hour ferry ride from downtown seattle and all the shops, events, family fun, and dining it has to offer.
SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO MOVE TO KITSAP: i highly recommend bremerton for its accessibility, community, and housing options...

I lived in bremerton for 30 years but I have been living been living in another part of the country for the past 7 years. Getting out of Bremerton/Kitsap County was one of the best decisions that I had ever made. Bremerton was rated as having the highest crime rate per capita in the state last year, however, that is now no longer the case. It is now rated the second highest in the state. You can go down any street in Bremerton and have access to drugs. I strongly urge you not to consider Bremerton or any of the surrounding cities such as Seabeck or Port Orchard. Bainbridge(although pricey), Silverdale, or Poulsbo may be safer, but in my opinion, is too close to Bremerton.

Suggestions?? Anyone please.
Hi,
Here's the deal and i'd appreciate all the advise and suggestions anyone has to offer. My best friend will be stationed in Bremerton come Janurary for appx a year. He has asked if i would consider relocating there for a while being that i've talked about getting out of Illinois for some time now. I am considering. I am a liscensed cosmetologist, not military, and i wanted to know the employment opportunities that may be available and best location. Also, i've read a few comments on Silverdale and Poulsbo, but what are the areas like and how far are each of them from the bremerton base? Where are the hair salons located? I guess that's it for now. Thank you to all that reply.
new girl....
