My wife and I are moving to the Seattle/Tacoma area in September and are trying to find a good neighborhood/suburb to live in. I'll be working in Tacoma, but we are looking for a place a little closer to downtown Seattle vs. closer to Tacoma. We're looking to rent an apartment/townhouse/condo, with rent between $1200-1600/month. We'd like a safe area that has restaurants and shopping close by. I've heard the traffic is bad, but it would be nice to have an easy commute to downtown, and a descent one to Tacoma. I've been looking into Renton and surrounding areas. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

From the commuting perspective, living somewhere along the Sounder Train line could make sense. Kent and Tukwila have Sounder stops, and if you lived in Renton it's a pretty easy drive to the Tukwila sounder stop, which has free parking.
You also might want to consider Burien, which is a quick trip into downtown Seattle, and a relatively traffic free trip into Tacoma.

Maple Valley, Black Diamond and Enumclaw are nice and quiet and have great schools and low crime. Can't say the same for Auburn, Kent, Renton, Burien and Federal Way.

You really ought to consider the Proctor District in North Tacoma.

Proctor District, Tacoma, Washington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It may have everything you want, except of course for proximity to downtown Seattle.
