I'm not sure this is 100% accurate, actually. The previous record is around the 9C mark if memory serves (sorry I'm too lazy to check), so 6.3C would be quite a bit below. Kind of Perth having a 6C high after the 8.8C record in 1956.
It is accurate, just checked www.weatherzone.com.au and Weather News - Desperate times as Alice shivers on coldest day
In fact it only broke the record by 1 degree.
If you look at the long range forecast the cold in the Alice is only short-lived, it will be back to low to mid 20's C by the w/e.
Only Yalara, near Uluru has recorded a colder day.
Tennant Creek's cold is very impressive aswell, considering it is a desert location at about 19º lat.
Second day in a row they haven't exceeded 11C / 52F as the daytime high!

Yep it is, not withstanding it's desert climate and relatively low elevation. You'd be lucky to see high temps that low at non-mountain stations in bloody Tasmania. GeorgiaGirl can take a leaf out of your book, her comment was completely ignorant of the facts and totally off topic. Sad to see the mind numbing ignorance some people possess without even bothering to do a smidge of research.

Same here, I was mixed up though. Don't blame me, in summer I don't think much at all (except for today when I went for my permit test I thought straight and got it on my first try) so I just looked at this and didn't think (no opening the article as my netbook is incredibly slow if I open a new window). I believe you don't realize that I am a teenager.
I'd expect none, considering that this is about 15C below their averag July temps.
An underground home would stay cozy, (dirt = insulation + thermal mass)
but a house with 100% exposed walls would be hardly better than a tent.
Do they do underground homes in Tennant Creek?

Alice is about 750 metres above sea-level - wouldn't really call that low. It's often the coldest part of the NT, and has got down to -7C. Not sure if it's snowed there but it has snowed at Uluru and the MacDonnels before. Alice's July average minimum is about 3C.
Being recorded during the day at 23º lat and in the desert....it is freaking low. Alice's elevation is modest and many places at similar heights much further south are often above 6C during the day.
