Temp barely etched past 6C/40F at Alice Springs today. By comparison, Melbourne's record low high is 5C.

Latest Weather Observations Alice Springs Airport

Other spectacular low daytime high temps in the region include 11C/52F at Tennant Creek, Northern Territory (lat -19.50),

15C / 59F at Halls Creek in the WA kimberelys (average high is about 30C) (lat -18º).

Numerous sub 20C/68F high temps were recorded last week in the Pilbara aswell, including Broome and Port Hedland.

Whilst this is unusual, this is not impossible, even for this far north.
Alice Springs has a continental climate, and if a southerly front is strong enough, it could keep temps below 10C for the whole day.
Most places in central NSW and SA would have recorded single digit figure maximums at one time or another.
The Alice is only just over the border areas.

Well, it is impressive not just because its under 10C, but the the *amount* by which it fell short of the 10C mark.

Makes me glad it's not winter. It's been over 35°C in the afternoons every day since Sunday where I am.

Though a high of 6°C/ 40°F is a warm day for winter. Don't have to bundle up too much and can walk around with your face being cold.

This may be cold to you, in reality the only temp that is cold to me is the 40 temp because I'm remembering back to the cold snap, during the snap, we had NW winds that made it feel much colder. Last winter will not happen again.
I am only glad its summer when I'm out at the beach or pool. I can't do these things all the time.

Noticed it was pretty windy, too. Not sure what expected highs are but 6 - 8 degrees (C) seems unusually chilly for a spot sitting within spitting distance of the Tropic of Capricorn; even if it is 1500 feet in elevation.

That is remarkable.. 6C high for somewhere at 23S...Was there any snowfall recorded overnight? I think Miami hit a high of around that this past winter one or two days and they're at 25N.... so this type of weather can happen in subtropical climates.

Alice Springs winter temps would concern me more than their summer temps
because they can easily be colder than any coastal city in southern mainland Australia (avg 67 F, but records of 20 F or less)
and their altitude keeps their average and max summer temps lower than places Saudi Arabia. (avg 98-100 F, max 115 F?)

Wow that's quite amazing.

What's causing that? It seems to be warming up a little on the East Coast.

My cousin is living in Port Hedland now after having spent her whole life living in Dunedin and Wellington. She seems pretty happy!

The Gold Coast and Brisbane have some pretty nasty weather forecast. I hope it warms up by the time I get there in three weeks' time.
