Back in the 50s there was talk of using the new radar to calculate actual rainfall, rather than the few official stations, to get a more realistic rain total for regions. Doppler is even better, showing the amounts of rain and allowing a very good idea about rain fall. But as far as I know, it is still just the official stations used.
