Irene is actually forecast to have a positive effect on our weather, it will stop the northern blocking, introducing a south-westerly warm and humid airflow for us come September!
It was thanks to Hurricane Gordon in September 2006 that we had a very unusually warm few days near the end of that month; though it was windy. The deep low to the NW advected a lot of moist and very warm air from the S/SW and it reached 28-29 degrees across England. Just another wonderful thing about that beautiful month.
Right now it's below freezing on the summits of the tallest mountains in the UK, and snowing! Currently 58 MPH sustained winds with 74 mph gusts, so blizzard conditions there!
