I like the look of evergreen trees against a cloudy sky. Reminds me a lot of Michigan and Upstate New York, and even my part of New Jersey. I'm sure it's like that in other cloudy climates.

Oct -Dec have been the opposite this year, with close to record sunshine and very little rain. I've had to irrigate since the start of November. On the plus side, the swimming has been good since mid October.

Much duller, but with 45% of possible sun average in winter (51% annual, and has been increasing over the last couple of decades) one can generally sit those out. In the "north of the south" the 58% winter tally is almost the same as the annual one.

Yes, the Nelson station recorded its sunniest October (records from 1922). Mind you, December isn't guaranteed yet in sun terms. In 2007 very high values in November were followed by a warm but cloudy December. On the east coast of the SI December has often been considerably cloudier than the preceding months. In your zone as in a few others, December has the lowest average % of all the months.

December often seems to have a dull predictably to it, a sea breeze producing a cloud layer by lunchtime, light rain later in the evening. Great photos,it's what I like about winter so much, a good frost followed by a ripper day. Working on orchards during winter here can still mean sunglasses and a hat, especially under a big high.

On the other hand, the "dry" of 2000-2001 saw Nelson top 300 hrs in Nov, Dec & Jan, with a record 2826 hours for Oct 2000-Sept 2001. I'm quoting only Nelson numbers, as the site near Motueka (not currently recording sunshine) has not had a satisfactory exposure since the mid-70s - prior to that it was a little ahead of Nelson and on a par with Blenheim for averages.

Great pics! Looks similar to a much sunnier version of Vancouver with more broadleaf evergreens. I can only dream that we can get that kind of sunshine near our winter solstice

How often do you have clear days during the winter?

Not often... totally clear days are almost unheard of here in winter. We do get some days with a mix of sun and cloud but they are not that common overall. Usual weather pattern here is dull gray skies for days on end
