It rarely happens inland.

I remember witnessing a thundersnow event in Vienna in Jan 2000, was at the airport heading home, the weather was absolute tripe and the flight was delayed nearly 4 hours. Still a rare and interesting experience.

You're in Massachussets and in Summer 2010 didn't even have one t-storm?
Toronto had at least 20 in summer alone.

Oh. We had a number of thunderstorms. But not were especially powerful and the heavy rain did not last very long. The last two summers were much better thunderstorm-wise. I used to look that the radar all the time and see them miss us.
One storm we had this summer had rather heavy rain but it didn't last all that long. I remember going outside in just shorts and getting a shower that washed all the sweat away. A girl across the street was standing in the rain, too.

I hope some of your rain/thunder blow this way. They have both been absent here for a couple of months. When I lived in the mountains here, I saw 1 or 2 thundersnow events a winter. I didn't know it was uncommon.

Train station subway. I had to catch the train to the city today, but luckily managed to leave before the storms hit. The storm pretty much followed me home, never seen such black cloud in my life, it was toward the city, and at my place was sunshine when I got off the train. About 10 minutes later, all hell broke loose...
This was taken near my place
Radar image of the storm system, clearly showing a bow echo
Doppler image of winds at the same moment, showing windspeeds in excess of 90km/h

That was a nice bow echo. Get any tornadic activity with that?

I wish we had thunderstorms here. We've only had ONE this year, and I won't be expecting any more for a long time.

Our summer looked like that quite often, didn't it?
(its the reason I never planned a trip to a Great Lake beach this year. )

Summer of 2010 did not have any thunderstorms here (at least that I can recall). It was just very dry with little rainfall. I remember the year before though, we had a real doozy of a thunderstorm by Vancouver standards that made the sky turn completely black and torrential rain and hail came down in a short period of time.
How many thunderstorms does Melbourne get on average in a year?

Melbourne, like all subarctic maritime climates, gets very few storms. The average thunder days per year I think is 10. Only the desert (especially the area around Geraldton-Carnarvon-Exmouth) of NW Western Australia, Tasmania, and the freezing subarctic oceanic Ireland-like SW Victoria get less storms.
Summer 2009-10 was a standout though, stacks of spectacular storms with awesome nighttime lightning. This summer though, it all dies in the ass as soon as the sun sets, unless ofcourse you are in NE Victoria or Bendigo, the ****ing storm capitals of the country (this year atleast). As good as this outbreak is, it is pathetic as it seems to avoid Melbourne at all costs while areas just to the west, east north and south explode, and there is **** all night time action. I am ****ing pissed off
We do get about 140 days of ****en slate-grey stratocumulus tripe and drizzle though
