It melted really really fast. It's only 22 degrees here right now. It was 32 when it snowed. And it snowed twice.

I found an article about it: Phoenix-area residents report snow falling across Valley

Quote:
However, National Weather Service officials said that what people actually saw was a phenomenon called graupel -- soft hail that freezes higher in the atmosphere and as it comes down, warms and melts a little, much like a snowflake.

22F down there, wow. Some years London doesn't get that low so the average man in the street here would take some serious explaining how it can be 22 in Phoenix! If snow fell at 32F and fell to 22 surely it would stick though?

Well at both times it the was at 32 when it snowed, but when I posted this last night it was 22 degrees. A lot of people are suprised that it gets this cold in Phoenix. But it's not as cold as the Freeze of '07. Phoenix usually experiences 2 big freezes every winter. Some are worse but the minimum temperature in Phoenix every year is some where in the teens or 20s.

The personal wunderground stations around Flagstaff, AZ are reporting temps anywhere from -4 to -30F

Is it normal to have that much temperature variations in the higher elevations of northern AZ , is there lots of microclimates there?

It's not normal for temps to drop down to -30 but they are possible Last year it dropped to -18 in the beginning of December. The entire northern section, Eastern section, and parts of the southern section of Az recieves snow and cold winter temps.
Some days it'll be sunny and 70 in Phoenix but snowing and 30 degrees in Flagstaff. Don't be suprised if you see places in northern Az having temps in the negatives, it happens quite frequenty.
