It's a broader range than all the continents, except for Asia (Tirat Tsvi, Israel 129.0 F and Verkhoyansk, Siberia -93.6 F) and even that's quite a close call (only 5-6 F more).
Impressive considering that North America is about 1/2 the size of Asia (a bit less even, if you consider Eurasia as a landmass), and the record highs and lows were closer together in latitude, at 36N to 62N (Asia's is 32N to 67N).
It's now -32°C/-26°F in Harbin while Hong Kong's high today was 18°C/64°F And I've checked for those two cities only. There might be even more striking extremes.
Although I'd like to experience subzero-degrees-weather someday, I'd rather be in 80 degrees in Texas we reached today than -46!
I've only experienced negative temperatures once, and that was at Wolf Creek, Colorado. But with this major cold spell that's forecasted it's looking like Lubbock will have lows hovering around 0*F! What's even more amazing is that we reached 72*F yesterday.
I'd like to be up in North Texas this week then, but not permanently with the largest chance of tornadoes, etc.
But down here after getting up to over 80, it's supposed to be hovering around in teen's, with good percentages of snow storms. And I know I'm younger than most of the members here, so I'm probably speaking for a small crowd: I'm really hoping to get out of school!
I camped there in late May a couple years ago and it was below freezing in the morning.

I'm seriously laughing out loud as I am reading that right now--that's nothing!! :-) I camped out just 12 miles from Saranac Lake from Fri 1/21 to Mon 1/24 and at 6AM on 1/24 it dropped down to -27F at my tent---albeit warmer than the official reading at Saranac which was -35F that morning.

I'm amazed that none of your skin in the photos is pink from cold.
I think if I were camping, parts of my face would be bright pink at 5 F, even with Canada Goose apparel.
You gloves?
I can't handle gloves that size, even with "Thinsulate" for 20 minutes at 20 F/-7 C without my fingertips being nipped from the inside.
I would probably need thick mits to go over the gloves, with a chemical hot pack in between the mitts and gloves to handle -20 F camping.

Nice photos. I know that doesn't sound very cold, but when you have summer camping gear it's rather chilly, and I didn't expect temps that cold in late May. Was still bearable though.
