And AC in these tropical places are always considered a luxury rather than a necessity. I know because I actually did live in such a place. And yes it might be hard for some to fall asleep when it's close to 80 degrees in the middle of the night, but people somehow manage (fan, open the windows, drinking cold water, etc). Heating, however, is almost always a necessity in a cold climate, and it wasn't just the matter of living standard. Houses in Beijing, for example, are centrally heated, even though most people there are 'poor' compared to the westerners.

Exactly. The majority of people living in really consistently hot climates deep in the tropics can't even afford A/C! They still survive though!
