There has to be 3-4 months of good swimming weather to feel like summer to me. This year was closer to 5 months, so a real bonus. Temps would only get to 80F once or twice some years, so I don't pay much attention to temperatures so much as warmth. Another measure of summer is the time when sunburn is an issue, so October to the end of March.

Having only a 10C/20F difference between the coldest and warmest month possibly makes summer less significant than in places with colder winters.

Do you consider temps in the 70's (F) to be good swimming weather? If temps only got to 80 F once or twice during the whole summer, no one, and I mean no one, in my area would consider that we even had a summer at all.

Yep, those temps are fine. People from your area may think differently if they lived here.

It all depends what you are used to. 70's temps is spring, or more like May here. Not too many people swimming yet. But you may have a point. In Sept swimming is still popular and the avg high temps are in the upper 70's. I guess we are all still in winter/spring mode until it gets over 80 degrees. And many times I've gone swimming in FL in January when temps were in the 70's. Of course, the sea temp was also in the 70's then.

I think 3 months of summer is enough, with temps over 80°F and nightime lows about lower 60s. If it were up to me, I'd have one month of very hot summer temps like 90, 100 and that's all just ONE MONTH. The rest would be comfortable with fall, spring, and winter.

In Perth summer sort of begins a bit 'late' in November, when we consistently get temps of 25c and above. True summer temps are at least 30c with a few scorchers. In Perth beaches are noticeably more crowded if its over 32c.

I would say highs should be at least around 86, with warm nights, upper 60s to around 70. Ideally i would like to see 3 to 4 months of summer. In PA, we get classic summer weather generally from late June thru most of August, so about 2 months. This is pretty good, as long as we don't get a Cooler than Average summer. I hate those.
