Interesting...but to be honest, that doesn’t really surprise me however. Like Miami, Rio really is at the far northern limit of the true tropics (23.5 N – 23. 5 S). So a few nights a year chilly temps can be expected. If the number and brevity of chilly nights in Rio are anything like that of Miami I’m sure they are quite brief.
How often does Rio see nights in the 40’s (4 – 9 c)? Since our landmass is bigger I would expect we would see more nights in the 40's in Miami than you would in Rio.
For fun and did a quick scan of all the sub 50 F (10 C) nights at Miami International Airport (where the official weather station is) over the last 5 years (including the past two record breaking winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011). I would be interested to see what the same data for Rio would look like:
If you know a good link to Rio climate data post it here, I would love to take a look.
I belive you see more nights in the 40's than In Rio for sure but not in Miami beach where is milder because of the ocean influence so its more like Rio,Key West would be very close to Rio in terms of cold snaps they are very light as in Rio,however on average they are both warm,Miami is even Warmer than Rio as I posted before
I hear Miami is not as lush as Rio de Janiero. What about Fort Lauderdale? It's classified as a tropical rainforest. Would you say it has more lush than Miami, or Rio for that matter?

If you want to compare the averages I don't really see a difference I never find a climate that look almost the same!
Key west at 24 lat is warmer than Rio at 23 lat, ,Miami Beach the island and Rio have the same averages temperatures on a yearly basis. Also Miami is much warmer than Sao paolo and other Brazilian cities around the latitude...
The average temperatures are the same for Miami Beach, FL and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Miami Beach, FL is wetter than Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by 0.3 in.
Records:
Miami Beach, FL recorded the highest temperature of 98°F in 2005.
Rio de janeiro lowest temperature ever recorded was 4.8 c so there isn't a huge difference than Miami,Sao Paolo did even worse than Key west and Miami with a freezing -2.1 c and is located at 23 in the tropics, people exagerate about the freezes in Miami when you can find similar record temperature at the same latitude in the southern hemisphere. Here are some record temps in Brazil the do get cold there as in the north hemisphere but of course is a very very rare event as in south florida.
BRAZIL
Brasilia 1.6* 35.8* * extreme temperatures of 1.3C and 36.0C were recorded at the Airport station
Sao Paulo -2.1* 37* * unofficial temperatures of -4C and 38.5C were recorded in other city stations
Rio de Janeiro Center10.2* 39.1* * extreme temperatures of 4.8C and 43.1C were recorded in other parts of the city
Curitiba -6.3* 35.2* * unofficial temperatures of -8.9C and 37.4C were recorded in other stations
Campinas -1.5 38.9
Foz do Iguacu -4.1 40
Florianopolis 1.3* 38.8 Extreme Temperatures Around the World- world highest lowest temperatures
You mentioned you have lived in both cities;
I realize that there is a dry/wet season in both (seasons reversed, of course) but which city seemed hotter “before the rains” to you. I ask this question because often (to me at least when I lived there), the hottest time in Miami seemed to be just before the tropical rainy season kicked in (late May most of the time). April and May were often scorching hot/with little rain, and blazing sun. This May has a good example; Family down in Miami have told me that just about every day so far this month the highs were from 88 to 92 F (29 – 31 C) in metro Miami…and rainfall has been below normal and the wet season seems stalled (mostly it’s been hot and sunny). They are hoping for rain just too cool things off.
Is this typical in Rio before the rains? Does it get hot/dry/sunny then seem to turn a little cooler/cloudier once the rains roll in? Not that I mind heat at all, but deep summer in Miami often seemed cooler/more comfortable than that desert -like sun and dry air that hit you in the face in April, May, or very early June.
40F and 30F is a huge difference in temperature. You can grow nearly any tropical plant (except maybe the most ultra-tropicals) with a record low of 40F, but only sub-tropicals and the hardiest tropicals can tolerate 30F with no damage. By the way, Brasilia is at nearly 4,000 feet elevation and Sao Paulo is at about 2,500 feet. I doubt they've recorded freezing temperatures at sea level.
On AVERAGE Key West may be warmer then Rio, but Rio has more constant winter temperatures, while Key West is more affected by arctic air tunneling down from Canada.
I looked at coastal Rio's 2010 history, and the lowest temperature was 60F in August. Seems like cold is much rarer in Rio then it is in Miami (which always records a low between 30 and 48F). Even Key West drops drops into the 50sF every year.

From my personal experience I went to Rio in august 2009 and It was cool and rainy for Brazillian standards, but that was unusual as the rare cold spells that I experienced In Miami, the only places that don't have cold snaps are those located in the equator, like Fortaleza which located in northeastern Brazil has much stable temperatures year round than Rio and Miami,I found very funny that a lot of people complain about the heat in humidity in Miami which is the same as more tropical areas near south America but the people who live there don't complain...
From what I can tell you Miami summers are longer and hotter than Rio but Rio can have more extreme temperatures,on the other hand Rio seems to have only slightly winters than Miami but only maybe during the coldest winter month but the difference is minimal,Rio coldest month is July While Miami is January as opposite.

.
Actually isn't much. One to three days in the high 40's. And it's only for the lows, because at afternoon heat comes back and highs break into 80's.

Where did you get that data from? It's totally wrong. Lowest temperature on 2010, officially recorded, was 48F(9,3ºC), on August 18th. You shouldn't believe database got from overseas sites. When I want to look into USA's temps, I always run into american sites, not brazilian ones.
Complete database from cold mass under question:
Location Rio de Janeiro. From Aug. 12th to Aug 18th. Official ones:

13-08 91F/57F
14-08 82F/62F
15-08 66F/59F
16-08 71F/55F
17-08 75F/53F
18-08 78F/48F
See the big range of temperatures? That's how Rio's climate works. Lows in the 50's in the morning, and fast heating through afternoon, reaching up to 90's. Unlike Rio, Miami got high/low close to each other.

This can confirm that it DOES get cool in Rio as Miami, the problem with Rio is that there isn't a lot of data available, for ex look at the predicted forecast for the week for Rio,it does get chilly in June and on...
