Default Rate the Climate: Thompson, Manitoba

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thompson,_Manitoba#Climate

I give it an A. A little chillier than ideal, but love the snow, sunshine hours, and comfortable summers.

Wow. This is even a bit worse than Calgary.

While I gave Calgary an F+, I give this an F-.

The main difference is that Calgary has 1 million people while Thompson Manitoba has only 13,000 people so I find it much more fascinating that Calgary is so heavily populated considering its weather climate.

Also, Calgary is much more south than Thompson yet it is roughly as cold as this place which I also find it fascinating.

Thompson is much colder than Calgary.

Winnipeg, though warmer than Thompson, is colder than Calgary. Winnipeg's population is over 630,000.

I disagree.
Calgary, Winnipeg, and Thompson are all very cold most of the year and roughly equally as cold in general and all three prone to equally extreme extended cold spells.

Calgary and Winnipeg have the same all time record lows.

Also, Winnipeg actually has noticeably warmer summers than Calgary!

Average highs and lows in June to September for Winnipeg:
June: 74/51
July 78/55
August 77/53
September 65/43

Average highs and lows in June to September for Calgary:

June 68/45
July 73/48
August 72/47
September 64/39

Also, the past 4 years Calgary is having more below average temperatures and below average sunshine than Winnipeg a lot of the time.

No doubt Winnipeg's summers are warmer, but the difference between the two cities during the summer is subtle compared to their differences in the winter.

I would not say that it is much of a subtle difference for summer. I would say Winnipeg is usually noticeably warmer than Calgary for summer which makes a huge difference for many. For me, Winnipeg is a tolerable but less than ideal summer but Calgary summer is mostly unbearable.

Also, I do not see much of a difference between Calgary and Winnipeg 6 to 9 month long winters to make Winnipeg seem colder.

Calgary also gets more average snowfall than Winnipeg in May and September.

They both have the same all time record low.

And some months Calgary has colder all time monthly record lows than Winnipeg. Some examples:

December Calgary: -45 Winnipeg:-36
May: Calgary: 2 Winnipeg:12
September Calgary: 8 Winnipeg: 19
October: Calgary:-14 Winnipeg:1
August: Calgary 26 Winnipeg:33

F+/E (small discount from the worst ratings because of moderate sunshine and low. precip.)

I agree. Note also that despite being at a much higher elevation, Calgary's mean annual temperature of 4.1C is higher than Winnipeg's 2.6C. The warmest month difference is 3.3C in Winnipeg's favour, but the coldest month in Winnipeg is 8.9C colder than Calgary's! (-8.9C vs. -17.8C). That's a large difference.

Calgary is 100mm/year drier, and a handful or so of hours sunnier.

{Data from Canadian climate normals}.

A mean temperature of 16.2C in the warmest month is far from being "unbearable".

C because of the frigid winters (specifically, December through February; I'm fine with early and late winter). I've never experienced temps that cold, so I'm going to assume that it's hard to deal with. I like the snowfall and nice summers.
