Interesting reading! I'm finding out this summer the heat is bothering me more than I thought, and even though I don't want summer to fly by, a cool spell would feel pretty good, right about now!
Hmmm, 40's is where I dig out a lined jacket, 50's I might wear a hoodie, low 30's I might get out a lighter weight winter jacket. I have 3 levels of winter jackets, my down I only wear when the wind chill is in the single digits or below zero and I have to be out shoveling snow.
It seems I'm irritated with the weather here at least half the year.
I like your angry range.
You have a very broad tolerable range, both higher and lower limits than mine.
My mood ranges can shift up or down 10-15 C (18-27 F)
depending on my activity level and sometimes sunshine intensity, so I'd rather not pinpoint.
I still find days at 15 C and nights at 7 C very pleasant for winter; a season supposedly devoid of warmth.
It depends on the season and conditions, but here's my general range.
Happy: 0-75 F
Tolerable: 76-85 F
Irritated: 86-93 F
Angry: 94 F +
It's important to point out that humidity plays a huge factor. If it's 75 F + and humid, I'll most likely be unhappy. But if it's a dry heat, I could tolerate up to the mid-90s, maybe even higher, provided that I'm in the shade with a breeze and a cool drink.
My range is different for overnight lows:
Happy: Below 59 F
Tolerable: 60-64 F
Irritated: 65-72 F
Angry: 73 F +
Here are 4 NZ locations, 1 each top and bottom of the country, and 2 in between. I used last July's figures for this year, period June 2010- end of July 2011
max min
Cape Reinga 57 1 - This place had rather a lot of 14.9C maxes
Tauranga 50 104
Nelson 125 164
Invercargill 252 292
Now while I tolerate the 80s, I prefer them June-August only. 90s irritate me, and over 100(which thankfully we hardly get up here in Colorado) makes me upset. I'd rather just stay indoors. While i love the cold, I don't see the need to get below 20, but I know I can tolerate it in winter. Below 0 only irritated me because of the car starting slowly or the roads freezing etc. I've never been angry with cold weather though.
I thought it up when sometimes I'd ask myself "...Why am I here? Was it worth the effort?..."
and most days and some mornings, the balmy weather would give me a quick reminder.
Days that match my criteria make it worth it; they feel better than most of Toronto's non-summer weather.
I think I enjoy days at 15 C partly because our weather is so stable.
If we were getting some days with highs of 24+ C and then had a 15 C day it might feel a bit foul.

Thanks for staying on topic and I'm impressed by your work.
Does NZ have a similar meteorology site to BOM?
Is your home like any of those cities?
Cape Reinga actually sounds quite balmy for NZ.
Tauranga sounds far better than NZ average. I'd put it on par with Adelaide.
Yes it has a lot more cold lows, but assuming you get a decent diurnal range, cold temps are short-lived; gone by 10-11am?
Is Nelson about average for NZ?
I wasn't expecting Invercargill would do well in my test.
