A big occasion here, with the first snowfall in 37 years. There is not quite an inch. The temperature dropped to 1C/33F at about 6pm and the rain turned to snow, which fell for about 2 hrs.

I can remember the last snowfall in 1974 (as an excited 11 year old) and it looks to be about the same amount. It will be interesting once the sun rises, to see if there is any damage. I can't imagine banana plants taking the load well.

Wow, pretty impressive after a mild start to winter! I'd imagine some people would have been saying lying snow would never happen there again, given that some were saying the same about significant snow in London after a long stretch of mild winters and snow here is far more likely. Do you know if that's two snowfalls in recorded history, or just in your lifetime?

Yes, it's turning into one of those "nothing would surprise me" winters. I was wondering if I would ever see snow here again. Prior to 1974 there was reports of snow falling, but not settling, in 1963 and 1945, and they appear to have been very localized. 1939 was the standout year with 2-3 inches settling even on the beaches. No record of anything before that, although there probably were snowfalls.

Sorry, I'm a bit behind in the technology department (kicking myself now), but I will try and find an old phone camera that is around somewhere, and see if I can load some pictures. The Nelson Evening Mails website will probably have plenty of images in another few hours.

Glad you can enjoy it. I'm glad I moved to place that can look forward to the snow every year as opposed to every 100 years where I used to live.

Which month had the 1974 event? That winter was wet in many places but not very cold. 1976 was notable for some snowfalls in unusual places in June.

That is awesome. Thank you for posting. It means a lot to us and me in the U.S! Any local news articles with pictures will help us even more.

Thanks. Enjoy the snow. :-)

The only reference I could find was at tutiempo.net, which says August 15, but also says the temperature was 9-15C for that day, so I don't know. My father said that it did happen during what had otherwise been warm winter weather, but he can't remember the date.

I'm surprised it doesn't snow there more often. Based on your daily temperature postings, it seems that temperatures near freezing are far from unusual during the winter. I would've assumed it'd snow at least a couple times a year.

Interesting... I'll definitely have to take a look on the net for some pics. I'm sure it's probably all melted by now...
