Why must some of the world's most beautiful landscapes have such a harsh climate?!

Fantastic pics!

Warpt, that is so admirable of you that you're part of a rescue team in your area. I feel sorry for anyone who would be trapped outside and lost in your climate. It's even worse then here.

Arctic, I like your sense of humor. It's 40 below and you refer to it as "the first cold snap."

Warptman

Back in 1968-70, I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, outside Anchorage. I remember when I first got there, we took a bus up a four lane highway to a mountain-site where we worked. When spring came and things thawed out, the four-lane highway became a narrow two-lane blacktop. I remember sometimes we would have to stop the bus to wait for a moose to move - and they got in no hurry. I really enjoyed my time in Alaska; it is some beautiful country. I hope to go back someday and take my wife.

Warptman, they showed Bethel last night on an episode of "Cops". It looked like it may have been summertime there and they showed shots of the city. The story was actually about a drowning accident that happened 100 miles away from Bethel though. Guess they showed it because the two officers who were in the retrieval unit lived there and took their plane to the other area. Sorry but I can't remember the name of the body of water. (lake or river???) But they said there were many drownings there.

That show was taped in the late 80's early 90's. It was in the Kuskokwim I believe. The pilot that flew the two Troopers went up to Tuluksak and got a prisoner. The pilot is the same person that I flew with that weekend of the river trips. He is by far the best pilot around the area here. The only accident he was in was when he was a passenger of a commercial airline here. They took off and the engine quit. He had to tell the pilot how to land the plane with no power. They both walked away from the over turned Cessna. He is a great friend of mine and a local hero.

That is so interesting. Isn't it funny what a small world it is? You actually know the guy that I saw on that show.
