They do bring cold northwesterly winds across Canada and the Northern US. They usually don't drop more than a couple inches of snow. Here's a good explanation:
After an active tropical season like we've had this year, MD usually has a cold winter. Snowfall is dependent on storm systems coming up from the Gulf and contacting already in place cold air. Except for far Western MD the storms coming out of the west brought out of Canada don't impact MD with much snow, although we do get the cold air.
Well, I hope our first major snow is after Dec. 1st, no 15-20" of snow at once, just the usual 6-10 is fine for a storm! I would like just a normal winter, no big blizzards, or record cold snaps (probably too much to ask)!
We just last week broke record for low temperture this early.I am no expert but it might be a sign of things to come. Last three years we also got snow in december which seldom happens more than one day in ten years.

here in the carribean we been at near record low temps.. i smell brutal winter for the states,, worse than last year..
