Heavy snowfall in eastern and southern Newfoundland – up to 29 centimetres at the St. John's airport before 1 p.m. – has closed most schools and businesses, and is causing hazardous driving conditions Thursday.

The previous record snowfall for this day in the St. John's area was 23.9 cm in 1972.

Driving, wet snow started overnight and continued into Thursday. Mid-afternoon Environment Canada weather warnings remained in effect in the Placentia and Cape Race areas.

Lucky them. It's been close to a decade since I've seen a November snowstorm.

It's been quite mild in Newfoundland, especially St John's.

Not really, they are right around the average, if not colder.

I'm pretty sure it's been pretty mild, St Johns would usually have had snow before this date.

Nope. The average high for November is 42F, there shouldn't be any sticking snow. If anything, it has been colder than average.

Not sure if this is taken from an official station, but according to wunderground they're only running slightly above average. This past week was below average, but the week before was above average. It comes close to balancing out nonetheless.

If there is snow, it has to be a sporadic occurrence, and usually toward the end of the month. Perhaps you should go there, it is a great place. If I'm not mistaken, Newfoundland is more Anglo than the neighboring Quebec.

That it is. English is the main language in NL, even the people that live there have a bit of a Scottish accent going on, interestingly

True.. St John's is the oldest city in Canada..

Actually Atlantic Canada is very Anglo.. Nova Scotia is Latin for New Scotland.
