Bodie, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can see why this place became a ghost town... 100mph winds, 302 nights when the temp is below freezing.

D, freezing nights even in summer is way too much - nothing temperate about this.

A cold continental Mediterrean climate! (Dsc)

Very high snowfalls for such low precipitation as well.

D.

Wow, what an interesting place/climate! I know it's so far up and all but I still can't quite imagine anywhere in California being so cold and desolate. Presumably the summer days are nice and there's a lot of sun, but those diurnal ranges and crazy summer record lows plus the aridity = no thanks. D.

Whatever has a -11°C record low in July gets an instant F.
I must not be funny changing clothes in summer. Jacket weather in the morning and t-shirt weather a few hours later.

Very interesting find! Presumably sunshine is quite high but the general coldness of this climate is such that I can't give it any higher than a D-. The warm summer afternoons save it from an F.

Looks like a fascinating place though -- the photos on WP are very impressive.

Very interesting and rare type of climate.

F, of course. The summer temps are quite similar to what I recorded with my weather station while camping in the Himalayas at 4.600m asl (Lake Tso Kar, Ladakh, India) - i.e., over 3 days in summer, average low of 0.5°C and average high of 21.2°C. It was really odd to experience, 20°C+ with a burning sun in the afternoon, and freezing mornings. I bet it must feel similar in Bodie.

B-. It would be an A-/B+ (lows a little too cool to give it anything higher; 10-15°F warmer, especially in the winter, would be perfect) if wind speeds weren't particularly high.
