-45C/-49F in northern Sweden.
When it warmed up to -20C/-4F people considered it a heatwave and started undressing.

That is often the case. It seems as if acclimation has more profound effects on the cold side than the hot side, acting over a wider range.

-20°F or so for me, though I'm not sure if it was that cold when I was outside.

Was in Upstate NY (near Ithaca).

Whereabout?

The coldest I can remember experiencing was in the winter of '96/'97 in central Iowa. One of those "so cold your nose hairs freeze" winters. So of course my idiot friends and I put on shorts, wore our flannel shirts around our waists like kilts, and then walked around outside talking in bad Scottish accents (keep in mind Braveheart and Rob Roy were still very recent at that time).

I find the opposite. I never ever ever ever ever get used to cold. Ever. After the crappy December 2010 freeze here I was only too glad to get to "normal" 3°C+ temperatures after below freezing for weeks.

Whereas in this warm spell currently, temps like 24°C (5 above average) seem normal to me already and not warm at all.

The place I grew up at in Central British Columbia has been down to -50C on several occasions. The record is -52.8C (-63F) that occurred in December of 1968. Chilanko Forks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

right now it is 8 degrees out and I was walking outside with shirts and tshirt and it was so cold my lips were chattering. Totally not used to it and not ready for it yet. but in January this would be dream come true.

Meanwhile last week I was sleeping outside where the low was only went down to 23c with 75% humidity.
