They are both the same with San Diego being very slightly warmer and very slightly drier.
Being from the northeast, you wouldn't feel the very slight difference. Pick the city that appeals the most to you in other areas; job opportunities, traffic, things to do, areas, you'd like to live, etc.

Los Angeles has hotter summers, colder winters, due to it's inland location. San Diego always has a nice breeze, but there's really little difference in their climate. I voted for San Diego because of the sea breeze and cleaner air.

If you can even see the sun with the smog, lol. Just kidding, this is true, San Diego gets that marine layer.

Just curious. Does it rain more near the coast then inland areas?

San Diego due to being slightly drier and less pollution.

It does, I was referring more to downtown LA, which is inland, and therefore, the marine layer doesn't last as long and doens't come as often.

To the OP, not sure if the question was directed at me, but I live halfway between inland and the coast. So milder weather than inland, but not as cloudy, windy or mild as the coast. But I've noticed that there's more mist on the coast from the marine layer, not sure if that counts as rain...they're pretty even in terms of actual rain.
