Now that there is only about two weeks left of meteorological winter 2011/2012 in the Northern Hemisphere… I thought it would be interesting to see what cities/NWS stations had the fewest days with freeze. If your local NWS station is not here - feel free to update the list and repast it: I’ll update the list if I get time and see any station changes. I don’t bother to list every Florida station with less than 15 days with freeze out of redundancy. You can search for your city here (Preliminary Monthly Climate Data/Month/ Station: National Weather Service - NWS San Diego
I tried to find only stations with less than 15 days with freeze (32 F/0 C) since last fall.
For reference to other cities/stations with number of days with freeze - NYC had 27 days…Seattle/Tacoma 28 days…Chicago 68 days…and Minneapolis, MN 87 days…and Denver had 110 day with freeze since last October/November. I highlighted the cities that have been freeze fee this fall/winter:

Interesting! Were you also the one that did "the cities that didn't have highs under 80°F yet" thread? If so, soon you will note that on January 3rd Riverside,CA was the first to hit over 90°F this year with 91°F. The next day San Gabriel, CA also hit 91°F. We haven't had anyone else hit 90 since then, but soon we shall see perhaps the first 20 cities to hit 90 and by May, maybe list cities that haven't hit 90 yet. That would be a nice idea.

Yes, we did that back in the fall.
I'm a bit shocked that Riverside has hit 90 F so early in the year! Is that a bit uncommon? I know the high deserts heat fast even in late winter, but Jan 3rd seems a bit early. I'm sure I left alot of cities out of the above list (number of freezes), but I tried to stick to the bigger NWS stations. I just realized I left Yuma off the list.

Might have to add one to a few of those Floridian cities after this weekend. ( Jacksonville(24), Daytona(30) )
Tampa's low temp actually hit 34 yesterday and 37 this morning. So close. lol
Long Beach, CA: 0
Monterey, CA: 3
Oakland, CA: 8 (a couple days missing data)
Eureka, CA: 6
Crescent City, CA: 5 (41.75°N !)
Arcata, CA: 21 (very close to Eureka and near the coast but must be a microclimate effect)
North Bend, OR: 14
I added these to the list...good reseach, I didn't think of these stations. I scratched Arcata, CA becasue they had more than 15 days with freeze. Note how with a few exceptions (Orlando, San Antonio, Riverside, desert Southwest...etc) coastal stations seem to rule the list
So here is the new list: Bold is still stations that have been freeze - free.

Even NYC getting only 27 freezes in the season still sounds rather pleasantly mild to me.
Keep in mind that at Central Park observatory – in the middle of a heat island in a city of 7 million people. I would guess that many other stations in the Tri-State area outside the main NYC area would have many more days with freeze this year. Huge heat islands can do amazing things.
