Well, summers are long here in Tennessee and the winters are usually mild. However, around August, then the suns angle starts to get lower in the sky, I start to feel that gloom. Its just knowing that those shorter days (getting dark at 5:30 in mid winter here) are on the way. I love it until after Christmas, then I am ready for spring. January and February, I loathe. It starts warming up nicely here in early March (sometimes late February some of the trees will start coming out), but for the most part, yes, I hate to see summer come to an end, but with the hot and dry summer we have had, (in the 90s and lower 100s), it will be a nice change. Even upper 80s and lower 90s here forecasted all week long!
One trick that helped me beat the gloom of Jan and Feb was to realize that the days were beginning to get just a wee bit longer even if only by a minute or so.

You guys are south! I was SHOCKED last year at how short the days got up here in Michigan...
Well by March 21 we get 12 hour days, and it's still cold!
While a 12 hour day is nice, I've discovered that I enjoy a 55 F record mild afternoon in late December, with 8.5 hours of daylight A LOT more than a seasonable high of 35-45 F with 12 hours of brilliant sunshine.

*Detroit can be this cold too; are you having second thoughts about living up here???
Ah...sounds like around Toronto! Can't wait to visit.
My experience last winter, which admittedly was a mild one, was that it was fine. I'm very fair skinned, and more of an indoorsy type person anyway.
Of course there were a couple of times it got TOO cold...like when the HIGH was 5 degrees! I must say that hurt. No frolicking in the snow that week.
No second thoughts...even if I hated it, my wife has a great job, the cost of living is a fraction of what it is in California, and both her parents and mine live here. She is an only child, plus my only sibling has moved to Michigan as well. So...it's Michigan for the forseeable future! Of course, if the job materialized, I would consider Grand Rapids...

Happy to hear you like where you live...
But don't be surpised if you get a freak heavy snowfall and hard freeze as late as early April.
I've seen mornings at 17 F and afternoons at 26 F in April. (yuck)
When the calendar says it's the First Day of Spring, maybe 1-20 or 1-30 years it actually is spring. (usually still winter)
Around here, we typically get no signs of spring until the last 1-4 days of March.
One year the leaves refused to pop out until late-June because we had the same weather from late March repeated for almost 3 months with afternoons in the high 40's to high 50's. So that year we didn't really have a spring; in one to two weeks it went from highs around 55 F to highs around 80 F and into the middle of summer.

Wow! Down here the leaves start turning--just a few, just a bit!--by the end of August. Right now most everything is green but bits of red and orange and yellow are starting to pop out...
Over here things start getting green the last week of April or so.
Oh...and talk about freak weather! Last year, the earliest measureable snowfall for our area on record happened on October 12th! It killed the autumn leaves, which were just starting to peak...
