The Autumn has abruptly turned cooler over the last day or so, thanks to a high pressure system bringing cooler air from the Southeast. If this keeps up there might be some good frosts not too far away.

It has been a nice Autumn overall, generally sunny and warm. It is getting a bit dry though, with only 1 rain day in the last month.

If you consider just April, it's been a lot more than "generally" sunny so far. In the first 16 days Nelson has had 140.5 hrs, New Plymouth 138.4 and Tekapo 134.9. If maintained, these rates would break the monthly NZ record of 246 hours. A very different story from Napier to Gisborne.

Word on the street is - Niwa may install an automated sunshine recorder in Motueka next year. Here could be the new Whakatane.

It would be more legitimate than that pretender that suddenly became the sunniest location, after 45 years of records that said otherwise!

I thought Blenheim had a good reputation for sunshine in New Zealand. Mo'town is on the opposite side of the bay to Nelson. I guess the finger of land that Nelson and Picton are on would break up some of the easterly cloud as well (compared to Blenheim). I've only been to Marlborough once (in 1993) and only to Blenheim and Picton, so I'm not in the best position to judge the climate in the area of course.

If you look at the longterm records for Blenheim and Nelson the averages are virtually identical. I think Nelson has had a slightly more favourable exposure for some years now and it has been a little ahead of Blenheim from 1997 onwards, apart from a couple of years. On the other hand, for the period 1948-1979 Blenheim headed Nelson on all but 5 occasions. The current easterly La Nina stagnation scenarios haven't helped Blenheim, and its February record low value didn't do the grape growers many favours.

Well, since yesterday we're enjoying truly fall weather. After a Friday with a high of 28.4 C (83.1 F), Saturday high was 22.3 C (72.1 F), and today it must have been around 18 C I guess.

Fri 14.2 C (57.6 F) / 28.4 (83.1 F)
Sat 11.6 C (52.9 F) / 22.3 (72.1 F)

The forecast for the next few days seems promising:

Sun 7 C (45 F) / 17 C (63 F)
Mon 8 C (46 F) / 17 C (63 F)
Tue 5 C (41 F) / 15 C (59 F)
Wed 6 C (43 F) / 16 C (61 F)
Thu 8 C (46 F) / 15 C (59 F)

Skies will be sunny to partly cloudy and some rain is expected tonight.
So nice...

^^^ wow, that's even worse than Melbourne's forecast!

had a good thunderstorm last night, about the 3rd this year. Can't understand how the storm season went to shyte as soon as the new year rang in. 2011 Sep-Dec was one of the best periods of storms I've seen, then as soon as we hit 2012, it died in the ass.

Lovely forecast for BA, seems like around the 25th of April is the turning point for the Southern Hemisphere autumn (Anzac Day for Aussies and Kiwis). Cooling down appreciably now even in Sydney after a warm weekend.
