Yes, Cairns is rainforest. I'm much happier here in the "dry tropics."
I love trees but I don't need to be hemmed in by a 20 metre/70 foot wall of green.
I'd prefer better weather than having the lushest vegetation.
Cairns' climate looks absolutely fantastic to me, bordering on A+
You really seem like the dry warmth lover type. I discourage you from moving to an equatorial climate. You probably wouldn't even feel comfortable in Singapore in December, when it's 23-29°C, rainy and windy with <5 daily sun hours on some Dec days there I didn't feel warm at all, so I kinda see what you mean with Townsville. Makes me laugh when people go like, "oh my god 23/29°C thats a sizzling sultry sauna!"
If someone was very fair-skinned and cool-tolerant, then San Francisco would be more pleasant.
NYC's summers vs Brisbane's summers are probably not so similar
when you consider the strength of Brisbane sunshine.
Now that I have actually lived there,
I notice a tremendous difference in the effect of latitude vs. sun heat output with clear skies.
I visited Perth recently and on a clear day the sun feels quite mild compared to Brisbane at the same time of year.
There is very stark contrast between a cloudy day and even a day with light cloud cover.
White people get fried quickly just like in Florida.
Parked cars get super hot, very easily just like in Florida.
So its kind of apples and oranges saying summers are like NYC.
NYC in mid-summer is sunnier than Brisbane mid-summer
but if the clouds break the heat input and UV is tremendous.
